OMG, my mom is on TV! 😍 Surabaya, my home town, has received another award.
Congratulations to mom and the gangs, all the ibus, the bapaks and the krucils of the lovely Jambangan. It is soo good to see my neighbourhood to be profiled by national TV. Friends who have visited and stayed at my parent's house there, you should be proud too. I will send you a bill cause it is famous now 😜. And of course, congratulations to Surabaya! This city continues to be one of the few role models for citizen's participations and innovation on sustainable living practices in Indonesia.
This achievement doesn't come in an instant though. I remember when I was still in my young(ER) age, the city has started a huge campaign to encourage the citizen to be green and clean through collaboration with the media, corporations, and academia. Some competitions were effective to make the communities wanting to level up their game in the area of environmental stewardship. Not only for the money, but also the prestigious recognitions by the public. It brings the community closer together to achieve more.
Almost everyday, the biggest media outlet there, dedicated one page to tell stories of the innovation by the communities or just mere information of their environmental activities. Combined with contributions from private sectors for capacity building and funding some of the programs, and the universities in assisting the behavioural change of the citizens, the campaign finally showed some results even though it took decades.
But I reckon, the thing which make it works for some communities there is willingness (borderline obsession) to do what they feel right and to achieve more. They might not fully understand about the complicated aspects of climate change nor the confusing statistics about waste management but they JUST DO IT and are very receptive to the encouragement message to change. Innovation flourished, curiosity increased.
