It’s remarkable how we when get used to certain habits our minds almost subconsciously blocks other things. There is a restaurant nearby called @26beach, like a minute away, which for the last three years I’ve been passing by but never tried. On the weekends it get quite busy during breakfast-brunch, usually a younger clientele. Perhaps my inner old fart used that as a reason why I never made it in… until last night when the novelty bells began ringing.
So I was looking for somewhere new yet nearby to have dinner. A quick search reminded me of 26 Beach and how ridiculously close it is. Checked the menu, yum. Read some reviews, yum yum. I also learned that the place serves a mixture between Japanese & American cuisine like “Sushi Burgers” and has been open in Venice since 1982. Yum Yum Yum.
Not only did I settle, but I also sort of decided already that it’s a good time to have a burger. As you may know, after dropping the meats years ago I still indulge ever blue moon or so — last time it was In-&-Out, this time something more fancy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀
Here was I five minutes later sitting inside the restaurant. Being Monday night, with three other tables the atmosphere was quite and cozy — just as I prefer. The unique, colourful plates hanging on the wall add funk and warmth to the overall decor. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The menu is pretty extensive, and Derek was helpful with answering few questions. Even though I thought about seafood pasta, but again, I was looking for novelty. So my first ever sushi burger it was.
Between the 3 options: The Ahi tuna burger and the Mori Eel one, I went with Chef Katsu’s Original California Roll Hamburger: “beef patty with snow crab salad, avocado, sushi ginger, Boston lettuce, tomato, nori, wasabi-shoyu-mayonnaise.” The burger is quite big and due to my relatively small mouth I had to use both hands to fit it, as well as parts of my beard and face. It was all worth it though.
I told Derek and the smiley hostess they will probably see me again since there is so much more to try and we're next-door neighbours. Wonderful experience.
