Unilateral my friends. Always unilaterals. Notice the individual handles. They move separately. Unless you are involved in some sort of barbell sport I can hardly see the benefits of using a straight, fixed bar for these types of movements. Especially for surfers 🏄‍♀️ 🏄‍♂️

This applies to performance and joint health. I want to improve my pulling mechanics to help with paddling strength, endurance and efficiency. I don’t really care to get bulky or to look a certain way. But a body that is well balanced in all areas using quality movement and body control is going to end up looking visually impressive.

I mostly think of training these days as getting adaptations from my brain. Connecting new pathways with every single rep. This left shoulder has permanent nerve damage from an axillary nerve palsy 7 years ago. Notice the big scar on the back of my tricep from an explorative surgery. I’ve committed well over 10,000 hours to getting this thing working again and these lessons can’t be learnt from a textbook.

So the unilateral set up lets me compare what the left shoulder is doing to the right. Notice how I set up the shoulder position before the first rep? Every part of a chosen exercise is important. Especially the set up. I’m also happy for the shoulders to rotate naturally. Not trying to force it to do anything just controlling the tension then using that tension to get a nice contraction.
