You can always improve your major lifts. After your twenties, the goal isn't mass.... it's longevity. So it's not about weight, it's about technique. Feeling the connections, feeling the alignment, and the control. Decrease the load, work on technique, and then develop speed. Train smart. This is a bit of a FU to some dude shouting out on my magic seaweed videos that I probably can't even squat. I can squat, and it ain't too bad. Can some improvements be made? For sure. But that's training. Consider lower body force production and force absorption. Learning how to do a spot on squat, and deadlift, and then single leg variations of those drills, can build a mobile and robust lower body. Yeah, it carries over to your surfing. Over the past couple months the Waveblade team have had the privilege to be working closely with the South Yarra Sport and Spinal and Athlete Rebuilt (AR) team in Melbourne, Australia.

The A:R program is a unique approach to both rehabilitation and performance enhancement combining high-tech 3D motion biomechanics assessments with functional measures of movement capacity and neuromuscular control; the detailed assessments allow the A:R team to deliver an individualised program to optimise an athlete’s movement, reduce their risk of injury and enhance their performance.

Core & Shoulder. Ball rollouts. Has benefits to scapular "stability", and helps to drive some upward rotation of the scapula. That's a good thing, as the scapula and humerus gotta move together to keep your shoulder feeling good. Hits anterior core control as well. No arching! Arching is cheating. 15-20 reps. 3 sets. A good drill to reinforce paddle training and shoulder health. You've got focus on spinal alignment throughout the movement. I'll be 35 this year, and I need these shoulder joints to function for the next 50 years. You've got to throw some effort at keeping your body capable. This is a small snippet of a routine I move through a few times a week. Shoulder range of motion, scapular stability, rotator cuff work.... all pieces of the puzzle. So I ask, what do you work on consistently? I consult with fellas all the time that haven't surfed in ages because they've neglected their bodies. Take some initiative. If you've got issues at the moment, realize it will take time, and effort, but it will pay off long term, so reach out to someone for professional guidance, but understand it's largely up to you to make it happen.
