Around 430am my travel buddies and I awoke on a sunrise expedition to the top of Mt. Haleakala Volcano - which towers over Maui at more than 10,000 feet. Driving to the volcano, we were greeted with a clear, starry sky that stretched far out over the Pacific. Once we got to the top of the volcano, that was not the case. Instead, we were greeted with dense fog, 42°F weather, and some mist. Nope - not a single star nor ray of light could be seen.
We waited it out though, never losing hope (well maybe most of us lost hope), but I've always had the philosophy that you should wait 10 minutes beyond when you've made up your mind to leave.
We waited about 8 minutes and sure enough the sun made an appearance. I fumbled with my tripod and snapped about 4 pictures before the clouds ascended up to us once more.
Feeling mostly defeated, we began to make our way down the mountain. Luckily for me though, being nervous of altitude sickness from the 45 minute - 10,000 foot drive, I had drunken a ton of water and needed to use the bathroom... So we pulled off at a visitors center and I did my thing. When I exited the bathroom, this majestic scene took shape in front of me. I quickly sprinted to the car, grabbed my tripod, and alerted my friend. Roughly 200 photos later, I had this time lapse of the illuminating clouds passing through the volcanic crater. What a remarkable morning it turned out to be. Thank goodness for my small bladder. .
