This painting is called ‘Aids is Fun’ and is by Derek Jarman, who died of AIDS in 1994. As some know, I have issues with the promiscuous nature in the gay community, especially when quite a lot of men do not even bother with contraception. This post will show you what can happen to you if you get AIDS.
I saw this painting when gay artist Sunil Gupta talked me through it’s horrific backstory at the Queer and Now exhibition at the Tate, in 20171. This was one of the final paintings that Derek Jarman managed to create before his premature death. The virus not only caused him to deteriorate at a painfully slow rate, but it attacked his nervous system and his vision. When he was making this painting, he couldn’t stop shaking / staggering and he was almost blind.
The text in the paintings reads “BLIND FAIL”, “ATAXIA” “AIDS IS FUN”, and “LET’S FUCK”. Each text has their own deeper, and more frightening meaning - you can find out more about this in the Tate website.
Hopefully this’ll make some gay men think twice before they choose to have unprotected sex. I for one have a rule where I only have protected sex - and that’s an end to it. It just takes one mistake to end up like Derek Jarman... #aidsisfun #sunilgupta #derekjarman #tatebritain #queerandnow #tbt #safetyfirst #usecondoms #safesex #safesexisgreatsex
