"It's nothing to do with us, it's not our fault. In the heart of every man and every woman a kind of Garden of Eden endures, where there is no war, no death, where wild animals and deer live together in peace. All we have to do is to reclaim that paradise, just close our eyes to everything else. We are a man and a woman. We love each other." Happy Valentine's Day, right?
This book, though tinged with romance (not that that's a bad thing), is a remarkably nuanced look at war time humanity. The author originally planned it to be written as a symphony in five parts, an epic telling. But her life (and maybe this story) was cut short by a gas chamber. Her daughter saved the manuscript. It was published for the first time in 2006. This is a beautiful, modern-yet-timeless, vibrantly written first hand account. Go pick it up! #bookstagram #suitefrançaise
