“Watch out, this book will make you want to become a stripper.” A quote from the friend who gifted this book to me. Over a year ago now, she had just gotten into pole dancing as a hobby and was talking about becoming a stripper. I don’t think she was ever really considering it seriously. It seems it’s just a supportive and feminist idea for her. Similar to pulling out your wallet at the end of a date and having no intention to pay, but making the gesture for “feminism”, which, sure. Nonetheless, she’s v supportive of sex work and has become quite a skilled pole dancer. The book for me actually had the exact opposite effect. I hadn’t been considering becoming a stripper anyway, because as a black girl from Detroit, it would have been too cliche a route to take, although the financial and empowerment benefits do seem nice. The stories @jacqthestripper tells in the book are fun to follow. I really just love the overall sense of adventure. I appreciated that she discussed that there’s discrimination in sex work just as there is in other life. I sort of wanted to know a little bit more about navigating that world as a part of the #lgbt community, but maybe it wasn’t that significant in this context and that’s why we didn’t get a strong dose of it (in my opinion). More than the stripping though, the story line I was most tuned into was her journey to becoming a writer. I appreciated her openness about her “writers retreat” or something similar she called it, which was just time she took for herself to write her book, then ended up not doing that for an entire year, then somehow still producing a book at some point. That was most memorable for me. The illustrations are fun also. This past Christmas, that same friend bought me her second book, #striptastic, a little quotes and illustrations book that takes scenarios from her actual experiences. I highly recommend this book if you’re into voyeurism and adventure and have a strong stomach. Some of the descriptions of those #timessquare clubs were v gross. I will definitely get around to reading this a second time, hopefully this summer.
