2019 Hawaii State Disc Golf Championships is in the books. I finished in 7th place in a tough field of competitors, but still made the cut for prize payouts. The course was challenging; I had a few bad rounds, and 1 hot round even after getting bitten by wasps🤯. Overall, I had fun, made some new friends, and added more tournament experience under my belt! #hawaiidiscgolf #bigislanddiscgolf

Our next interview is with Carli who’s home course is Crane Hill DGC. When stepping up to the first tee at her local, she reaches for her Opto Saint Pro.

She can’t do with out her Westside Longbowman. It’s consistent in the wind, great for tight hyzer lines and awesome for skip shots!

Here greatest achievement to date in disc golf is being able to put 900+ rated rounds together. Learning the game, knowing when to go for it and when to play smart.

When asked how would you grow the sport of disc golf? Carli would try to get courses into elementary, middle and high schools. If the sport is an option for youth the success of the sport will be even greater. .

What is your favourite disc and why?

My favorite Disc is the Westside Longbowman. It doesn’t give me a huge distance shot but it is consistent in the wind, great for tight hyzer lines and awesome for skip shots!

What is your favourite throw to play during a round of disc golf?

My favorite throw is a technical wooded hyzer shot. It’s beautiful to watch and throw when executed.

Are you part of a league, if so what is your handicap? “Tous Tag league Tuesday’s” – I am gifted a stroke for every par 4. If we play no par 4’s I do not receive strokes
Crane hill random doubles league, I receive 2 strokes. If paired with another female we get 4.

I also play winter team challenge where you play against the opposing teams females where you receive 0 strokes.

How many times a week do you get to play or do field work?

I play as much as possible and every week is different. My son is at an age now where I hope he will want to play more often. 🙂 I’m luckily to have met my husband on the course so we share the same love for the sport! Every chance we get we are out there.

Tricky putt on the 1st hole. Turned over a Tee bird in to the trees.

Today I played my best round of disc golf ever! I shot 2 over par, and crushed my previous personal best of +5 by 3 strokes!!! I threw a new disc for most my drives which is usually a bad idea, but today it was the key to my success! I still left a few strokes out there with a couple missed birdie putts, and at least one unnecessary bogey, but I am so close to shooting under par! Two more weeks til the state championships!

Our next interview is with Casey. She started playing disc golf with a sonic putter and dx beast about two years ago, and was hooked when she found out other women played the sport.

She is a proud member of Team Trilogy. If her bag was to burst into flames, she would save her Deputy, Northman and the Dagger.

Her greatest achievement to date has been winning the Intermediate division at the 2018 New England Amateur Championships. No small feat, considering she had badly injured her dominate throwing hand only a few months earlier.

How did you get into disc golf and how long have you been playing?

I got into disc golf about two years ago after I found the community disc golf has to offer! I was hooked the second I met other women who played the sport.

What is your dominant hand?

I am actually Ambidextrous.. so both of my hands feel dominant.

Are you Backhand or forehand dominate?

I am backhand dominant, seeing as I have both hands at my disposal it takes the pressure off needing to learn a forehand shot. I do have a forehand shot, it’s just not great

What was the first disc you threw and where is it now?

The first disc I threw was a Sonic Putter and a DX Beast from Innova.. I actually still have them!

You’re on the first hole at your local course, what disc do you reach for?

I constantly find myself reaching for my Northman from Westside. It’s such a great disc for those control shots in the woods and just stable enough to fight the wind on those wide open holes.

I have multiple molds just to have some variety on stability in the bag.

Christian Got his start in disc golf at a company event

He says “ I still remember my first real throw. It went 90 degrees to the right and almost hit a co-worker. “

That event lit spark, because fours years later he and his brothers took a trip to Järva (in Stockholm, Sweden) to play a professional level course, something he never expected to do for any sport.

How did you get into disc golf and how long have you been playing?

I started playing disc golf a bit more than 4 years ago. My dad and brothers had started playing a few months earlier. They asked, if I wanted to join, but I wasn’t interested at first. It didn’t seem like my thing.

Then a few months later we had a company beginner event where we got to try out disc golf. I was terrible at throwing the disc and had no background from any form of sport.

I still remember my first real throw. It went 90 degrees to the right and almost hit a co-worker.

During the beginner event I got more and more excited as the throws went further. I laughed at the instructors disc golf nerdy jokes. I was hooked. The next spring I took a week off from work to play disc golf.

What is your dominant hand?

Right

Are you Backhand or forehand dominate?

I currently throw both for drives and approach shots. During my first two years of disc golf I only threw backhand shots.

Last year I started practising my forehand since I couldn’t get any good consistency with my anhyzers. Still haven’t gotten the hang of throwing them well.

What was the first disc you threw and where is it now?

The first disc I threw on a course was an understable mid-range with a Donald Duck stamp on it. Never learned what disc it was.

The first disc of my own that I threw was a red Innova Star Leopard. I loved that disc. It still feels bad that I never got it back.

I lost it on a windy day, throwing a forehand drive downhill at Finland’s oldest disc golf course in Meilahti, Helsinki.

I have a new red Star Leopard. But it doesn’t feel the same.

Jefferson was introduced to the game by his uncle and has been playing for about 4 years.

Absolutely loves the community with in disc golf, doesn’t matter if online or on the course everyone is complimenting and teaching each other.

He got his first ever ace with a Star Destroyer.

What was the first disc you threw and where is it now?

My first disc was a champion banshee and it’s either still in the woods or in someone else’s bag by now.

You’re on the first hole at your local course, what disc do you reach for?

My gateway wizard to give me a nice straight flight.

What is your favourite course and why?

Golden Gate Park the course itself was so beautiful and it came with it’s one challenges and obstacles that I haven’t seen before.

Your disc golf bag catches on fire. You can only save 3 discs, What are those discs and why?

My Anthon destroyer, 2016 Sexton firebird, and obviously my voodoo I could never lose that.

Today’s Interview is with Matt from the UK. He is a Black Ink Discs sponsored player. He absolutely loves his Legacy Outlaw as his main distance driver and bags 6 of them.

He would love to win the lottery, buy some land and build his own course.

Taking some of the money to attract big named pros to come over to the UK with a world class course and a decent payout. He feels the UK is often overshadowed by other countries when it comes to disc golf.

What is your favourite disc and why?

Probably the Legacy discs Outlaw.

I trust this disc so much. It’s my main distance driver. I believe I have six of them currently in my bag ranging from understable to very overstable.

Whichever way the wind is blowing I know exactly which one to pull out. I like having that sort of confidence in my discs. Most of my outlaws have black Ink Discs stamps on them.

What is your favourite throw to play during a round of disc golf?

I mean I love throwing a huge hyzer, but for me my favourite shot is probably a midrange forehand shot. When I hit the correct angle I find it so satisfying.

I just really enjoy seeing the slower flight. I often throw a mortar for this shot. I have two in my bag with very different stabilities.

Are you part of a league, if so what is your handicap?

Currently not as I have a three month old boy so currently he takes up a lot of my time. I currently have the number four bag tag for my area but I’m looking to get the number one tag back very soon.

How many times a week do you get to play or do field work?

I try to play about four times a week. I often get up early before work to play which is usually around 5 am as having a baby makes it slightly more difficult to play more often.

The discs that you regularly bag are they all one manufacturer or a mix bag?

They tend to be a mix of Legacy discs and Discmania with my putters being innova. The majority of the discs in my bag are black ink discs stamped as they’re my sponsor.

Our next interview is with Shaun from the UK. He had been throwing a frisbee with his dog for years, but it wasn’t until a Trilogy challenge at the Basingstoke DGC that sparked an interest in the game.

If his bag was to catch fire he would save his Shield, Verdict and Thunderbird. In reality he’d go down with his bag trying to save them all.

He I loves how accessible disc golf is allowing anyone of any age and any ability to play. And that anyone can afford to buy and play with the same equipment that the pro’s use on tour.

How did you get into disc golf and how long have you been playing?

I was walking my dog who’s favourite toy was a rubber frisbee that i’d been throwing for her for six years in all weathers, when a stranger approached me and asked ” So are you one of those Disc Golfers then?” I had never heard of the sport, but he advised me that there was a local club (Basingstoke DGC) and that they had an event on this weekend.

I was intrigued and decided to check out the event for myself. It turned out that the club were holding a Trilogy Challenge that day and so my first ever experience of the game was at a tournament.

The beauty of this being that at this particular tournament (for those unfamiliar with the trilogy) is that you get a putter, mid range, and a driver as your players pack.

I was completely addicted to the game by the third hole. I have been playing, thinking and talking about the game pretty much every day in the three years since that event.

What is your dominant hand?

Right hand.

Are you Backhand or forehand dominate?

Back hand.

What was the first disc you threw and where is it now?

My trilogy pack comprised of a

Latitude 64° Maccana (putter)

Dynamic Discs Evidence (mid)

Westside Discs Sampo (driver)

I used them for about the first year of playing and then put them away safely as they are sentimental to me.

You’re on the first hole at your local course, what disc do you reach for?

Depends on the weather, but more often than not something overstable that I can send out on a nice hyzer.

#discgolfinterview #discgolfplayers

Mail Call: Discmania S-line CD2 & DDX. A gift to myself because I won league last month 😊 both are great discs and super easy to throw. The CD2 has a much smaller rim than I expected. DDX fits perfectly in the hand. Thrown both in calm and windy conditions, very pleased with the results.

Luke has been throwing plastic for 6 years, and really started to take it seriously when in junior high.

He is out on the in field or course 5 – 6 times a week and regularly finishes in the top 10 at local tournaments. A big believer in fieldwork and tries to do 100 putts a day.

Currently competing in the Oregon Collegiate Disc Golf League for his university. His bag is made up of MVP, Axiom or Streamline discs.

How did you get into disc golf and how long have you been playing?

I’ve been playing for about 6 years. Originally, my dad heard about it from a coworker. He came home with a few discs and we went out to play a few times.

But it wasn’t until 8th grade that I really became interested in the sport. One of the guidance counselors at my school started a disc golf club that met once a week for about 2 hours. I figured I’d played the game a few times so I’d go check it out.

Mr. Sauer, the guidance counselor, was very good, and taught me a lot about form and strategy. Also, I was the only member of the club for most of that first year so I got a lot of one on one coaching, haha.

What is your dominant hand?

Definitely my right hand. I’ve tried throwing with my left, it doesn’t work very well…

Are you Backhand or forehand dominate?

I started off entirely backhand and was that way for about 3 years. Recently, I’ve developed a really solid forehand and I am pretty confident going with either shot if it’s the right move for the hole.

But if it’s a wide open hyzer shot where I can throw anything I want, I’ll probably go for the backhand just because it’s what I’ve been doing longer.

#discgolfinterview #discgolfplayers

Happy father's day to all the disc golf dad's. This is the card I got today. I obviously talk too much about my Teebird3 and CD2 #fathersday

Our next interviewee old boss introduced him to the game disc golf. Casey was teasing him about not playing “ real golf ” and bet his boss that he could throw a driver further than he could throw a putter.

As Casey puts it” I probably lost that bet and it motivated me to be better and throw farther than him”

After the bet, his boss had gave him Dynamic Discs Judge putter. He used It until giving it away to a couple wanting to try disc golf.

When on the first hole at Sawmills Veterans DGC he will attack the hole with this 2018 Sexton Firebird.

When asked What do you love about disc golf? He says “ It’s the perfect pure shot with just a touch of flex. Just love watching those fly.”

Sandstrom star Valkyrie

Sexton firebird

2014 flag stamp McPro Aviar

What is your favourite disc and why?

Flat top KC Roc. Love the feel of the plastic and the consistency of the flight

What is your favourite throw to play during a round of disc golf?

Thumber!
