We recently had a former MJHL hockey player in the clinic looking to get himself back into running after a history of multiple lower extremity injuries. We had fun analyzing his differences between each leg and developing a program that consisted of single leg hip and glute strength exercises, ankle stability exercises, balance and proprioception drills. We’re looking forward to his return in 1 month to see the progress! 🏃‍♂️👌 .

Strength training or cardio? What’s best? 🤔 Honestly, it depends! There is no right or wrong when it comes to exercise. As long as you enjoy it and it’s helping you reach your goals then it’s a good thing! Personally, strength training wins over cardio simply because I want to be strong. 💪🏻 I want to have muscle. I want to have a firing metabolism so I can eat chocolate 😉 🍫That being said, running will always have my heart because running is ME time. Running makes me feel free. I don’t run to be fit. I run because it’s fun. I lift to be fit! 🏋🏻‍♀️ So do what works for you and if you’re not sure, experiment! Try lifting a few times a week, try yoga, go for a run or bike. Do what makes you HAPPY!

A good 10 mile run this morning. Less than 2 weeks until the Pittsburgh Marathon.

A great single leg (SL) exercise that gets the person in a more athletic position in comparison to the traditional pistol squat. However, in order to achieve adequate depth one must first have sufficient hip & ankle mobility as well as knee stability. I needed a new goal for me to work towards so my main focus is going to be to build and tone my glutes/legs over the next month or so for swim suit seasssoonnnn!

So sistas (and maybe guys?) if you are looking to build and firm those glutes you need this workout in your life!! It left my legs and butt quivering by the end of it.

Here’s what ya do: 
_

1. Squats (I had to do on smith machine because my gym doesn't have a barbell, not my favorite but it gets the job done) 
2. Walking Lunges 
4x10 heavy

1. Hip Thrust 
2. Raised RDL
4x10 heavy 
_
Now you are moving onto the burn out which is: 
_
1. Froggies (cut out of video 😩)
2. Hip Thrust (cut out of video😩) 3. Cable Kick backs
3x20 each

I ended with 15 minutes steady state on the stair-master & done! ✅

First run in 4 days. It felt great and it was a beautiful morning along the Potomac River.

Another Sunday, another training run. This time with a medal. Kate ran London marathon as part of her training for Ironman UK. Still a fab time of 3hr55 , on what proved to be the hottest London marathon in history.
Head down now and full focus on Ironman Uk in July, long bike rides, more swimming and runs to do.

A rainy run outside today. My legs were feeling tired, so I ran slow.

Heads up RUNNERS🏃‍♀️, this one’s for you! Here’s a great mini circuit to target glutes, quads and hams.

✅ Curtsy lunge step up. Just the best for firing up those glutes 🍑, as well as both stretching and strengthening the hip flexors, AND a lovely contralateral movement for those oblique muscle chains and core. What’s not to like!? To begin with, give yourself a small step to learn the movement patterns.

✅ Banded OMGs (oh my glutes!) and step outs. Go light bands and then increase the resistance.
.
✅ Standing knee extensions. Had to figure this one out in a gym with no knee extension machine and now I think I prefer it! Great for balance, core activation and quad strength. Was never good at just sitting on my arse anyway 😁. You can do this with a resistance band too.
.
✅ Hammie sliders. Start with just sliding one leg, then progress to 2. If you don’t have sliders, use a Tesco bag and feel good about a little recycling.
.
Aim for the classic 3 reps of 10. This is all doable from home just with a little help from a step, a band and an old bag 😉.

Party in the Park? No... PT in the park which was way harder work. My PT @simonedewspt called this the Kettlebell 500 or maybe it was ‘the hour of kettlebell hell’ ... we worked and sweat hard today 👊🏻 and found a beautiful shady spot in the park. Job done.... back to work...
