Part of my journey is investing more in myself. I've heard such amazing things about @1stphorm and I've wanted to try their products for years, but their products are $$$. However, when I think about all of the money I've spent during binges, it's a pretty good trade off. I've heard fantastic reviews about their greens and digestion/gut health, and I found a delicious looking protein ball recipe for this protein powder (with no PB!) that I want to try out.

My goal this week is to get up early no matter how tired I am. Part of this journey of weight loss and anxiety is being more intentional and getting into a proper routine. Looking forward to my first early AM weight lifting session tomorrow! Hoping weights are going to be a game changer for me.

Low back pain with planks?

Planks are a movement we often use as an assessment. They are a foundation of the push/press family (push-ups, bench press, etc.). Occasionally people tell us that their low back pain is worse when performing planks. In the top picture, notice the excessive sway back. This is one of the compensation patterns we see with the plank. The lumbar extensor muscles are more active than the anterior core muscles (abs). This creates too much extension in the low back joints and can create pain.
The other compensation we see is excessive elevation of the hips, which you can see in the middle picture. This results in the hip flexors and quads acting as the core stabilizers, instead of the anterior core muscles (abs). The bottom picture illustrates how we teach the plank - a neutral spine with good anterior core and glute activation. A coaching cue we like to use is “point your belly button toward your face”. Even Physical Therapists do exercise we tell patients to do...see! This is a great one for rehabbing the shoulder. I’ve been having some pain with catching objects, 🚴, and end range lifting movements 🏋️‍♀️. Incorporated this one into my routine about a week or two ago. Gotta build up that strength!

Windshield Wipers are one of my favorite core exercises. Many are trying to do this exercise, but they have a very bad form in their back. Always keep your back parallel to the floor in the whole performance of the exercise!
