I love seeing project shelves full like this. It may just look like stacks of wood but these are precious 'work in progress’ toolbox projects belonging to our Level 1 woodwork students, each piece has been measured, marked out, sawn, planed and had four corner rebate chiselled smooth and flat, all with hand tools! Pretty soon each student will be able to join all their pieces together to make their very own toolbox to take home and fill full of goodies. If you'd like to learn how to make a toolbox using corner rebates along with other types of traditional woodwork techniques, sign up for our beginners woodworking courses by checking our website for details.

Hands up who knows what the numbers around a power drill mean? That many hands - oooooh get you lot! Well for those of you that don’t know. Read on. When the drill is used as a screwdriver the numbers indicate the torque limit. By limit, I mean the point at which torque is no longer applied, and by torque, I mean the rotational force of the drill bit or screwdriver bit. When used correctly this feature is incredibly useful because you can limit the amount of torque that is applied to prevent screws ploughing too far into soft wood or plasterboard. Basically, the higher the number, the greater the force used by the drill. So when you use the drill as a drill, as opposed to a screwdriver, you set the number to the highest setting. Yes it’s that simple - mystery solved. So would you like to learn more interesting facts about power drills and how to use them? Then sign up for our fabulous beginners DIY courses by checking our website for details.

It’s like going on a little mini adventure when upholstering your old chair, in stripping it back you’re discovering its history. There’s always a sense of excitement when removing the years and layers of upholstery. Each chair has its own unique story, perhaps you’ll find the signatures of the framebuilders, lost earings, dusty old pennies or even old phone numbers from date nights long forgotten. All are fascinating clues as to where your chair may of stood and to whom it used to belong. At that point you know your chair will soon not only look beautiful but that it will last for many more years to come, with many stories to tell long into the future. Would you like to learn how to strip and upholster your old chair? It’s Monday Monday, is it a Manic Monday, or perhaps a Blue Monday? I’m still not quite sure why Bob Geldof didn’t like Mondays - did anyone ever tell him? Anyhooo, I'd like to wish Happy Mondays to all our Makershed followers and make this the first of a few 'Meet Our Team Mondays'. To start, here's Jenny!
Jenny is a woodwork enthusiast with a background in bespoke furniture making, in particular with reclaimed hardwoods. She is an experienced woodwork joinery tutor, working for both Bristol Womens Workshop and Bristol City Council Adult Learning Service, and is passionate about teaching skills and getting people making here at The Makershed.

Action shots! Swish, swoosh, tap, tap. Look at that saw and mallet move! Okay, well you can imagine it anyway can’t you. But what is going on you ask? Well we're sawing the sides of a housing joint which then has the rest of the waste material removed by chiselling. Housing joints are indispensable for fixing shelves neatly into uprights. The shelf fits neatly into the square-bottomed channel or ‘housing’ and it’s ideal for supporting weight and stops the shelf twisting. This one, on our Level 2 woodworking project is a ‘through’ housing as it goes all the way through the wood, there are however many variations, there are stopped, barefaced and dovetailed housings all of which have there own purpose. If you'd like to learn how to saw and chisel a housing along with many other types of traditional woodwork joints, sign up for our beginners woodworking courses by checking our website for details.

Did you know a spokeshave is essentially a plane for for finishing curved pieces of a project? No. Well you do now. Controlled by straight handles mounted on each side of a short blade it’s essential to have precise control over the angle of the blade. Until you learn the right ‘feel’ of using a spokeshave they can skid across the surface without cutting a single shaving, or worse bury its cutter blade in the wood. Devastating! If you'd like to learn how to use one and many other types of traditional hand tools, sign up for our beginners woodworking courses by checking our website for details.

I was going to tell you about the history of pliers today but that can wait! Let’s all look at how happy George (not his real name) is gluing up his case project. He’s just fitting hardwood wedges into his mortices, he’s got to wait for the glue to dry before some smoothing plane action and applying a finish. George’s next project is to make a dovetailed drawer and a mortise and tenon door to fit his case. Fabulous work so far George! So would you like to join the woodwork for beginners course and make a project just like George? Then visit our website for details on how to do just that and sign up today!

It’s brilliant how simply furniture with good bones but bad skin can be easily updated with basic upholstery techniques and spangly new fabric to get them looking fabulous again.
