I think it's time to retire these well loved running shoes.
Today, I was interviewing a new trainee. I asked him what brought him to Create Common Good. He told me about being hit by a car and flying out of his shoes. I stopped him. I couldn't help myself. "That happened to you, too?" I asked. His English was broken. He looked up at me with a face full of questions. I went on, "I was hit by a car too. And I flew out of my shoes. And it changed my life forever." "That's one way to say it," he laughed.
He's not someone I would normally meet. He's my fathers age. He's from another country. English is one of many languages he speaks. He is currently living in a homeless shelter. He landed in my office because he needs a job.
I never expected to have so much in common with him. Sometimes life has a way of throwing us out of our shoes and it feels like the world is imploding. And sometimes, we find understanding in a stranger and it starts to feel like maybe everything is falling into place.
Today, I'm reminded that God doesn't waste anything. Not one day, not one job, not one relationship... it all counts, and if we let it, it's all moving us toward a destiny larger than ourselves.
But, I am also ready to let go of the old... and maybe it's time for a new pair of shoes.
