I am beginning a photobook on beach culture in Santa Monica. It's a topic that's been done to the ground, but hopefully my methods will reveal something fresh and new about beach culture. I also want to artistically depart from this place. It's only so long before each photograph I make here starts to say the same thing over and over again.
That being said, this is a long-term project, one that will take anywhere between 2-3 years to finish. To be honest, I'm still finding trouble finding the necessity in making this photobook. I don't see too much of a point in it other than just to do it. There's the reason of closure, but I don't feel obligated to create it for myself. It just feels... polite... to the city. For teaching me a lot about photography. For moments of peace in stressful seasons. Maybe that's reason enough.

"Siamo solo all'inizio"

Jodette, 2017 [2/2]
It blows my mind how much history is in this little shop, and how so many people walk right past it everyday without a second look. I didn't buy anything. There were some film cameras but most of them were broken. But I definitely had a moment after reading her testimony and then looking at the pictures of her homeless ministry. I thought about how those pictures wouldn't exist if the car accident never happened. I thought about how the people in them might be living if they hadn't met Jodette. I wonder if my life would be any different if I hadn't met her.

Jodette, 2017 [1/2]
In Sacramento, I found a small, trendy-looking thrift store, which turned out to be a dance studio as well. Pictures of the same woman were all over the store. Literally everywhere. She looked a little different in each one, wearing the latest fashion trend or because of age. But I could tell it was the same woman. She was on her own DVD covers, framed paintings, newspaper articles, a signed photograph of her and Muhammad Ali. Yes, Muhammad Ali.
The woman all over walls is Jodette, and Jodette is the friendly woman who owns the store. From a piece she wrote and displays in the shop, I learned that she had been a very famous belly-dancer. She danced for sultans and Saudi kings and met celebrities like the Beatles. She had been in a car accident, which left her body broken, but she prayed to God to let her dance again, and when she made a full recovery, she devoted her life to teaching dance and feeding the homeless. A letter from Bill Clinton commending her for her work sits on a shelf.
