Blind Corner 4/8
I think I have been pretty clear so far, that I don’t like wasted space and weird corner cabinets that I can’t really access.
While I did build a magic corner for the one corner in the kitchen, it was really only because I could not think of a better way to use the space on that side.
On the other side however, I did have a choice. I had seen an access door to the lower kitchen cabinets from the living room side of the pony wall in a friend’s place. I thought that was brilliant. So I turned one of the cabinets around and cut a hole in the pony wall from the living room. And that is where a lot of things went sideways.
I hadn’t really thought much past ‘turn the cabinet around, cut a hole in the wall, put doors on it and drawers into the cabinet’. I had decided that it should not be the same white cabinet as the rest and that the door should be more of a natural wood, like the pine countertop the previous owner had put on the pony wall.
When I cut open the wall though, I got a little impatient with the drywall saw and reached for the reciprocating saw again. And again, it wasn’t my best choice. I should’ve known that the electricians would choose the quickest route to the last power outlet in the wall. Yes, I had to install a junction box and move the outlet a bit closer. More drywalling! Yay!
I also realized that it wouldn’t be quite so easy to stick the cabinet through the wall and have it at the correct height, etc., etc. So, I decided to build a frame out of prefinished 1/2’ plywood, the same material I was going to use for the drawers. I attached it with a half-lap joint, glue and some bradnails.
I decided to cover the front edge of the frame with drywall mud and left the doors ‘floating’ on the wall. Not sure if it was the right decision, but I liked it.
The additional 5” came in handy for the drawers. It allowed me to install 28” drawers. More storage! Yay! (2011-09)
