WHY YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THIS //
And what you need to learn from it (especially if you consume animal products): I spent a significant amount of time whether or not to say anything about this human, and these photos. Wondering if she deserved to be acknowledged, in any capacity. The answer is yes.
Dominique Rioux is a bacon-loving, bacon-praising, Montreal based chef. In addition to this gem, her IG feed presents photos of her cradling pig carcasses, cuddling with them in bed, serving them Palm Bay, removing their hearts, et al. This photo in particular has been reposted + recirculated. People are shocked. Rightfully so.
Including, meat eaters and non vegans.
How often do we see a pigs face or head after it has been slaughtered? This is something we don't see, on purpose. We see a face, a head, and for a moment it becomes a real, living creature to us again. Meat manufacturers want to avoid that, which is why the language around meat and meat production is so skillfully selected and used.
For many people and meat eaters, this photo might be the first time they've seen a dead pig. Or a pigs head. Don't be shocked by this. They are always there, except they're not in Western grocery stores next to the perfect packs of sausage.
If you eat meat and this photo upsets you, consider how you may react if she was cradling a package of bacon, or a ham hock. If you eat meat, you directly, and indirectly, contribute to this photo and this industry. Just because you can't see it all the time doesn't mean it's not there.
In one way, you endorse it, through your financial choices and what you choose to put on your plates.
I refrain from the multitude of profanities I could throw at this human, and implore something of you instead. Look at this woman, and this photograph, as an opportunity to shift your own perception. If it makes you feel horrified, do something about it.
Stop supporting the meat industry. That doesn't mean humane meat. (News flash. It doesn't exist). It doesn't mean less meat.
It means none.
