Story time! Hattie is in a very interesting stage of life right now! She is learning she has free will, and doesn't have to listen! She is pushing boundaries and realizing that she needs to listen to Mom! This morning she decided not to listen to Mom, and had to learn the hard way! And I saw it coming from a mile away, and guess what? I LET it happen! *GASP* Yep. You heard me I let my older dog Silas nip Hattie! Silas is the sweetest dog ever, gentle as a fly. And he HATES having to show his serious side and always feels guilty afterwards. Well this morning as he was eating his breakfast Hattie decided she wanted to torment him by jumping and climbing all over him all while trying to steal a few bites of his food. (She had already eaten her breakfast) Silas remained patient and tried his best to ignore her, and instead of me stepping in and grabbing her I decided to let Silas handle it. I gave a verbal warning to Hattie that she ignored. I knew Silas would be gentle yet stern, he showed his teeth and gave her a warning...she still ignored...so then he nipped her! Hattie immediately stopped, let out a little cry, then walked away and came over to me! And guess what? She left him alone for the rest of his meal and didn't bother him one bit! And I have a feeling she never will again! Lesson for the day here is, sometimes it's best to let another dog correct your young puppy then you. Hattie has ZERO fear when it comes to other dogs, and does not have any boundaries even when a dog is giving her plenty of hints to go away. Me correcting her would not have taught her anything in this situation, it never has. This is how dogs communicate with each other, and this is how puppies learn boundaries. She is as happy as can be now and her and Silas are still best buds, but she learned a very important and possibly life saving lesson today!
