THATS A WINNER! Cardinals defeat Reds 8-5 to complete the sweep! The Cards are now only two games back of the second Wild Card spot and four and a half out of first in the NL Central. For the third consecutive night, the Cards were able to put up a run in the first inning. Tonight Martinez got it started with an RBI single to give St. Louis an early lead. The Reds tied it up on a wild pitch by Martinez in the 2nd, but the flamin’ hot Dexter Fowler put the Birds back on top in the 3rd with a two run double, and Yadi drove in Dex with a sac fly to put the Cards out to a 4-1 advantage. Phillip Ervin hit a two run shot off of Carlos in the 4th to cut the Cincinnati deficit to a mere run. Yadi doubles in Jose Martinez and Wong drove in Yadi on a groundout to bring the Cardinals’ lead back up to a more comfortable three runs. Tsunamy lasted six and a third innings tonight, and was taken out for Lyons after he gave up a homer in the seventh to Schebler to cut the Cards’ lead to two. Martinez’s line: 6.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 6 SO, W. He definitely didn’t have his stuff tonight, as you could tell from his shaky command, but he was still able to turn in a decent performance, which is a big step in the right direction. Tyler held the Reds gutless through his inning and two thirds of work. In the 9th, the Birds got some insurance courtesy of a Garcia RBI double and a Mejia RBI single, making it 8-4 Cards. Duke came in to close out the game in the 9th. He gave up a homer to Schebler, but with it only being a solo shot, the Cardinals were able to hang on and complete the big sweep! Big showing from the offense this series, scoring 8+ runs a game, if we can keep that going we’ll have no issue making it to the Postseason. The Birds open up a three game series against the Pirates at PNC Park tomorrow night at 6:05 with Wacha on the hill. Go Cardinals!
