"A beautiful photo of a placenta.
The placenta does a lot of work in pregnancy. And once your baby is born, it is cast out of your body, never to be used again. Yes, the world’s only disposable organ is the placenta. Once the pregnancy is finished, this previously vital organ is no longer needed. In many births, the placenta is discarded after a placental exam, but some decide to eat it. Eating one's placenta is known as placentophagy. It is practiced by most mammals in the animal world, including many primates. This excludes the majority of humans, although it is done by some. Women have been known to cook placenta, dehydrate it and turn it into edible powders, blend it into smoothies—even eat it raw.
