I have never watched an episode of the British version of The Office (I am a huge fan of the American version though), so when a friend suggested we watch David Brent: Life on the Road, I was hesitant. I was quickly won over though and thought the movie was hilarious, by the time the credits were rolling I was already on eBay buying a copy of the soundtrack. The songs were my favourite part of the movie and collected they make for a really solid comedy album. Like Flight of the Conchords, Stephen Lynch or Tim and Eric, Ricky Gervais has managed to write funny lyrics (I imagine this alone would be very, very hard) that are accompanied by legitimately good music. These songs aren't meant to be great (that's the joke), but that's what makes them so endearing. "Native American', 'Lady Gypsy' and 'Please Don't Make Fun of the Disableds' are hilarious and the rap verse on 'Lonely Cowboy' is a cringe-worthy attempt to make to make Dad-Rock relevant; it's so, so good. If you're not a fan of dark humour or Ricky Gervais this album might not be for you, but if you like funny songs that have musical chops, give it a listen.
