I've been in a remote part of the Peruvian Amazon shooting Ashaninka shamans with my assistant @alexbraczkowski and @natgeo scientist @andresruzo for my worldwide jaguar story (December 2017). We've been on the banks of what is believed to be the worlds largest thermal river, the boiling river. It is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen and gets to nearly 100 degrees celsius in many parts of its length. Local medicinal healers in this region revere jaguars as an important animal and part of the jungle and their culture of healing.

Go to www.boilingriver.org to find out more about this incredible place and follow @andresruzo to see his incredible science work on this river!

#PlasticFreeJuly - TIP # 19: Think globally, act locally!
Why not organise a clean up event in your local community! Yesterday, I helped organise a Clean Up Australia Day event at my university and local hospital area. We had a guest speaker and prizes for the group who collected the most rubbish.
Most importantly, it was an easy and tangible way for people to get involved! Solving climate change seems daunting, however, every small step counts.
I truly believe we can all be environmentalists, let's think globally and act locally!

For my #TBT I'm contemplating on my time in #Africa and the wildlife there. Conservation has always been important; as a kid I consumed every bit of @natgeo , Nova, and Nature magazine and documentary I could get my hands on. Years later, I got to see some of the endangered species first hand and it just reminds me we are part of the planet, and that it should be preserved and protected.
So, for this image of a beautiful white rhino, I've removed the geographic infomation in the metadata to prevent poachers from data-mining and killing this magnificent creature for the traditional medicines markets in asia. #smallsteps #conservationmatters #MakeYourStoryWorthReading #kcolbyphotography

#Plastic #pollution.
We're all guilty of it. Consider every piece of plastic you've ever purchased, food wrapping, toothpaste tubes, product packaging, drinks bottles, bags.. the list is endless. Now consider that every single piece of plastic you've ever come across is still on this planet, somewhere.
Out of sight, out of mind.
Every day on Instagram many of us are guilty for only showing the beautiful side of nature and not the scars. Scars that we are responsible for. So I believe it's time we take some responsibility. There are many alternatives to plastic. But we are so USED to plastic that we're often blind to our use of it. And it's very easy to develop a sense of apathy when it comes to the plastic problem we have created as people.
To quote a great woman - "You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." -Jane Goodall
Dear friends and followers, as I struggle to attempt #plasticfree July, I urge you to give it a go too. It's never too late.
Start with small changes. #startwith1thing
search for plastic alternatives, RE-use, fix or repurpose. BE that 'difficult person' and insist on avoiding plastic. Because every small decision we make can make a big impact somewhere in this world, somewhere hidden under the sea. 🦈🐋🐬🐢🐟🐠🦑

Over 100 school kids here for the beach clean up at Crystal Bay! Go team!! 🌏🚮✊🏼

Our island needs you!! Rubbish gets picked up daily from businesses along the beach front so that tourists and locals alike can enjoy a beautiful paradise beach walk. Some of this rubbish is luckily sorted and recycled. Most of this rubbish makes it to the dump, and some gets blown and ruins all of the environment around the dump!
This week we are spending one hour cleaning next to the dump for our FREE beer! Join us near Villa Ottalia to grab a bag!
This week kindly sponsored by Trawangan Oasis so bring everything for a pool party after!

I was working on a story for @natgeo on the creation of the world’s largest tiger reserve in Hukaung Valley in Myanmar.
I had just arrived into Tanai the border town on the edge of the valley, driving on the Burma road which had just opened - the first time since 1945.
When I got into town I saw people everywhere with Toyota HiLux pickup trucks all jacked up, full of hoses and water pumps and people.
I asked what was going on and was told that 10’s of thousands of people had come in to the valley as gold was discovered.

As this story was supposed to be about the animals of the valley and how scientists measure the quantity and type of animals in the valley,
Well I got really bummed out - walked out onto a bridge to look at the moon and saw all these small homemade rafts and boats with little oil lamps in them
floating down the river - I asked what was going on and I was told that I came at a very important time that this was the Buddhist Festival of Lights.
I spent over an hour on the bridge and calmed down and decided that if the story had changed then I would change my focus and that is what I would cover. I learned so much about the local people
in the area - how gold mining works and that you cannot eat the same food of the tiger and expect the tiger to survive, as all these miners did not bring a supermarket with them,
they were hunting in the forests. Traders came from China as the Burma road had opened and they were looking for endangered species to sell back in their country.
This was my education on Asian jungles, people and trade, in the field on the ground. End result - after the story came out - the gold mines were shut down. this is a one minute exposure.

💪🏼🙏🏽 RepostBy @david_palfrey: "#Plastic #Pollution.
