There are two musicians in all the land that mean more to me than all the others: Ben Folds and Dave Matthews. A few years ago Jennie and I basically met Ben Folds when we jumped, danced and sang our way through one of his concerts on the front row in Kansas City. TODAY I WAS SITTING IN THE SEATTLE AIRPORT AND I TURNED AROUND TO SEE DAVE MATTHEWS SITTING ALL BY HIMSELF!
I would like to tell you I very nonchalantly sauntered up to him and said something cool like, "Oh, hello there Dave, please let me share a few tales of why your music means so much to me." Instead, I sort of stumbled over to him and said with a stutter, "Excuse me, do people tell you you look like Dave Matthews?" He humbly said, "Yes." Then I sort of blurted out, "Are you Dave Matthews?" Then I threw my hands up to my mouth and basically started crying (subtly, thank God) and I rambled something about how much his music means to me, which-statistically-he has heard 1,728,254.88 times. Then I asked for a photo. And for some reason, I handed him my phone so he could take it. Then I said, "Oh, wait. Sorry, I don't know why I gave you the phone. Like it's your job to take our photo." Then he laughed and all I could think about was how I couldn't remember how to smile for a photo.
I have been traveling since 4am, my make-up is barely there, I have my glasses on AND I could feel a little piece of bourbon chicken sticking in my back left molar. Even so, he graciously accepted my request and this is what I have to remember the moment.
Also, I don't think I breathed for the five minutes we were talking. When I walked away I wondered whether to exhale some more or breathe in. Oxygen is hard.
