We unfortunately learned our lesson the hard way after seeing the finish on our door (all stainless steel 304) begin to patina at an accelerated rate. You also see the distinctive streaking on the left and a more monotone and uniform finish on the right. Blackening of stainless steel should be carried out by experienced metal finishers. If done wrong it can easily result in costly repairs.

Make it a point to test the durability of your finishes. There are so many products out there and DIY videos/articles/ blogs online almost every installer you talk to will sound like an expert. One way to reduce exposure is to ask as many questions as you can and call as many manufacturers of the products your installers claim to be using.
