James Ensor, all-time master of the Aesthetics of What-the-Hell-Is-Going-On-Here. This painting from the Stadel is subtitled 'Communion', but good luck trying to get the story to stick. The woman might be praying or singing but she might just as plausibly be croaking out a spell, and it hardly clarifies things that her face up close is as harrowed as the masks and skulls alongside. It was the suddenness of the painting that got me when I saw it earlier this year, the lack of comforting preface or context. Trouble's up and running already inside it: just another day in Ensor-land. #jamesensor#waywardness#hellostranger#stadelmuseum
'Naples is a Paradise inhabited by Devils', said Goethe. Except he probably didn't and it's apocryphal. Whatever - I'm on my way there to check on the Paradise/Devil ratio in one of my favourite cities. Here is Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein's 'Portrait of Goethe in the Roman Campagna' from 1787, showing him among classical fragments and with a Roman viaduct and tower behind him. Look closely - he also has two left feet... #goethe#tischbein#naples#stadelmuseum#italy
Spent all day yesterday in the #StadelMuseum. Impressive #artcollection begun by the spice merchant and #banker#JohannFriedrichStädel who laid the cornerstone for Germany’s oldest foundation. His will stipulated that the “Städelsches Kunstinstitut” shall be accessible to the citizens of #Frankfurt as a #museum and #artschool (today's #Städelschule). "And – for all his personal modesty – he wants only the best for his institute: whatever is only of “moderate” quality in his collection of around 500 paintings shall be sold and replaced by “better” items." And so it #cametobe. @ianwaelder
Maria Sibylla Merian in Städel Museum, Frankfurt. What a woman! Incredible day from start to finish! Thanks to Sylvia Peter and Verena Redman for bringing together botanical artists from Germany, Austria, Holland, Italy, the UK and Ireland to enjoy the exhibition and share our work!
Which way are you facing? What have you chosen to put behind you? Now live in action. Keep the eyes of your soul focused forward. Ignore side distractions. Thank you Naum Gabel for this piece of art, displayed at the Städel Museum.
