Space Shuttle Endeavour left Edwards Air Force Base at 8:17 a.m. Friday for the final leg of its cross-country flight. Safely perched atop NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier aircraft, Endeavour will fly over Northern California and Los Angeles during its four-and-a-half hour ride.
Part of Endeavour's journey includes several low-level flyovers, starting in Palmdale, Lancaster, Rosamond, California City and Mojave before heading north to Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Twitter users in Texas and on the West Coast played #spottheshuttle , snapping great photos of the Endeavour and its 747 caretaker as they passed overhead.
The shuttle is set to make its later-than-scheduled landing at LAX airport 1 p.m. PDT for a special ceremony. Over the next couple of weeks, Endeavour will be separated from its 747 carrier. It will travel through LA's streets on Oct. 12-13 as it makes its way to its final home at the California Science Center.
