I responded to someone's question about the Spoonie tee shirt and thought I'd post it for others who don't know what it means. Basically a Spoonie is a person with a chronic illness or disability. A spoon represents a unit of energy. A regular person can generate an unlimited number of spoons. A Spoonie has a set number per day and doesn't get any more, period. She might use them up taking a shower and putting a load of laundry in. Then, crap, out of spoons, bed for the day. Being a spoonie is incredibly frustrating. Non-Spoonies, who can power through, have a hard time grasping the utter inability to function because of the medical condition. Spoon Theory comes in handy communicating to family and friends. "I'm tired" doesn't help. You get offers of caffeine or are told to suck it up. "I'm out of spoons" means "I'm going to lie down on this sidewalk and go to sleep and you can stuff it. I have no choice." Spoonies HAVE NO CHOICE, non spoonies. So they can get a little crabby when people constantly tell them they look great, they don't look disabled, you can rest when we get there, don't be such a spoilsport, I'll get you some coffee, I'm tired too jeez I just worked a ten hour day you've been in bed for 3 days what are you complaining about? A huge percentage of spoonies have invisible illnesses so they often do look pretty good. One woman I know recently lost 60 lbs within a couple of months. She is desperately ill. She can't eat without life threatening allergic reactions, and she can't absorb nutrients. She explains this to people. And still, they remark on how great she looks! I'm not showing her this shirt. It might give her ideas. Now you know what the shirt is about--Spoonies giving fair warning that someone has crossed a line, and if they can find one..more...spoon so they can find that meat cleaver, people are gonna stop calling them lazy!
