While the hubby is in Chicago, I’m running in Greece with @ifit trainer @tommy_rivs! 😜 Ok, virtually, but I really felt like he was talking to me! 🤣 .

Let’s be real though, everyone talks about how they despise the treadmill and I feel like as a mom, it’s just a necessity! I’ve never looked at it with disdain, perhaps because some of my fondest running memories are on the treadmill! 😍

From running pregnant (my ob/gyn wanted me to stop running outside after 6 months because I became a fall hazard with the laxity of my joints), to returning to running post partum with my babies in their bassinets within arms reach, and having to fit in my runs during nap times, I did it all on my old NordicTrack Commercial ZS treadmill! 🏃‍♀️ I still have to work some runs in weekly on my Commercial 2950 because of my husband’s’ travel/work schedule and I’m so grateful for it! 🙏

Do you find yourself saying “tomorrow is a new day?” 📆 I know I do! Whether it’s a screw up on a run or poor eating choice that was not part of the plan, instead of getting back on track, sometimes I derail my train completely. 😩 Hey, it happens and I know grace should be allowed.

But... the purpose in writing this is to tell you guys that if you are saying that every day something is amiss! 🧐 It’s okay to “live a little.” But if you have a goal in mind you have to look at the perimeters you set for yourself. 👀 Are they reasonable? Are they truly yours? Are you sabotaging yourself before you even try? .

One thing to remember about time - we may get a tomorrow but we sure as heck don’t get another today! So how are you being sure you are making the most of today??? .

It is estimated that 75% of runners of all abilities run too fast too often. They end up in what’s often termed the “mid zone.” I have fallen into the mid zone for years! 😬 I either try to keep up with prescribed paces (without considering elements), or try to keep up with others who are faster than me. 🤷‍♀️

What does running in the mid zone do for you? Well, aside from some great @stravarun segments, it doesn’t make you faster, typically makes you race flat and can lead to injury. 🚑

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be running speedwork in training or incorporating some speedy miles into your long runs as your event approaches (as I did today), but as a general rule you should be keeping your running to 80/20. 80% of your weekly running easy and 20% hard. 💪🏼 This can be measured by heart rate or pace. I’ve linked a great @runnersconnect article in my instastories by expert runner and coach @tinamuir88 that gives you the formulas for finding the sweet spot for your long runs! 👍🏻

After a couple of successful short test runs, I decided to give a longer one a go. 3 pain-free miles at a nice and easy pace. As much as the gorgeous weather is tempting me to run outside, I am only trusting my recovering back to my @NordicTrack x22i. Not only do I need the speed control to keep me conservative, but the reflex cushioning of the deck is really gentle on my joints. A few more months of recovery and physical therapy, and I hope I’ll be strong enough to take my training outdoors!

Hear me out. I got a B in creative writing in school and got college credit for my testing in AP Calculus. 🧠 It’s like my head and my heart weren’t aligned! I wanted to be good at what I loved but it didn’t come naturally to me (like running). 🏃‍♀️

Powerhike training at lactate threshold! (Not moving as fast as I hoped...) After two hard races three weeks apart, my running legs need recovery. To allow recovery without losing fitness, the best training I can think of is hard uphill hiking. Fortuitously, powerhiking is also necessary training for the uphill sections of my upcoming mountain 100-milers. Treadmills provide training flexibility and precision. By subtly adjusting the incline grade and/or speed while watching my heart rate, I can easily target precise heart rate zones while hiking (low 160s BPM at 25–30% grade today). I don’t have any other means to do sport-specific lactate threshold training on a day like this, which makes me very pro-treadmill. Catching up on trail running YouTube videos is also fun.

Yesterday @trackclubbabe posted a great post about when we need to steer our ships with the most focus! (Aka take control of our mindset). This really hit home as I’ve been stagnant in my running for many years. 😬
Whether you are trying to hit a huge running/fitness milestone or if you are trying to lose weight, think about the following the next time you miss an interval pace or derail your diet:

1️⃣ IS THERE A PHYSICAL REASON FOR THIS SETBACK? Sickness and injury can cause you to miss the mark and medications and the female cycle can cause actual physical increased hunger.
.
2️⃣ WHAT WAS THE TRIGGER??? Before you decided (it’s a choice) to slow down, or stop short, or grab the cupcake and say “screw it,” what made you abandon your goal? Was it stress? Emotions (confidence is huge)? Lack of sleep? Boredom? Figure that out and you’ll have a better handle on it next time because you can channel it differently. 🍰

3️⃣ PREPARE! You don’t set off to sea without doing the necessary pre checks! So when you set out to run or do a hard workout make sure that you’ve prepared for the obstacles and know how to handle them should the come your way! Often times they make you stronger! As for nutrition, this is the single biggest key for success. Constantly have an exit strategy!!!! 🛑

4️⃣ DO YOU HAVE A SUPPORT SYSTEM THAT PLUGS YOUR HOLES OR KEEPS YOU AT PORT? Look around at your family and friends. While they may not have the same goals or ambitions, do they support you? If not, it may be time to tell them you won’t drive a rusty boat any longer! 🚢

5️⃣ ARE YOUR GOALS REALISTIC??? This is a hard one because we all like to think with the right mindset we are capable of running and eating like @deena8050 and @shalaneflanagan but be sure you aren’t constantly overreaching. You don’t set out on a ship for Norway only having planned far enough in advance to get to Canada! A good coach will help you find a way to progress at a pace that’s right for YOU! (Nutrition coaches, too)! 🍽

Since my hamstrings have been irritated since my race on Saturday, I took to my @nordictrack commercial 2950 treadmill for my speedwork today: 2 miles warmup, 2x1 mile repeats (7:54 pace), 90 sec RI, 4x400 (7:14 pace), 90 sec RI, cool down to 6 miles. 🏃‍♀️ I also got to test out my new @uarunning gear and it did not disappoint!!! 😍Obviously, I have a sparkly brand new treadmill but the “dreadmill” has been given such a bad rap over the years and I’m here to defend it. 🙌🏻 .
