"The magic of bourgeois life reaches her only in its meanest form, and she accepts unthinkingly all the blessings that trickle down from above. It is typical of her that, in a dancehall or suburban café, she cannot hear a piece of music without at once chirruping the appropriate popular hit. But it is not she who knows every hit, rather the hit knows her, steal up behind her and gently lay her low." -- Siegfried Kracauer, The Salaried Masses

These election posters from the time of the Weimar Republic are on view at the entrance of our current exhibition question: On January 19, 1919 the population was able to decide freely on the new government. The Germans had no experience with the new form of governance. The old social elites mourned the loss of the monarchy, while the advantages of democracy were imparted inadequately to the man on the street. With every further election, more and more people swung towards the radical parties. In the end, the moderate center had virtually dissolved. « The avant-garde “grotesque” cabaret performer Valeska Gert ... believed that “the modern dancer had to liberate himself from old theatrical ways.” Inventing a pantomimic choreography through which to enact various states of being, she honed her movements to convey core emotions to her public. In Kanaille (Scoundrel, 1919) Gert interpreted a prostitute’s various emotive states—engaged, resentful, detached. In Der Tod (Death, 1922) she simulated the experience of death. » —from my essay on entertainment culture in the Weimar Republic for Schirn Kunsthalle’s exhibition catalogue “Splendor and Misery”.

The self portrait by Anton Räderscheidt from 1928 shows the artist in a bare looking room depicted without details but which is probably the artist’s studio. The man wears crisply ironed trousers with razor-sharp creases, patent shoes, a white shirt and tie. He comes across as decisive. In his right hand the man holds a pencil. Behind him stands a large-format canvas leaning against the wall and depicting a female nude. The work is considered to mark a turning point in the process of his finding his (artistic) self. Late night listen. #clipping #splendorandmisery #hiphop

clipping, splendor and misery: super experimental science fiction based hip hop, super weird and very dark at points with this functional narrative that flows through the track listening, just try to picture David Bowies 2001: a space odyssey becoming a hip hop record, really good album 8/10 #clipping #splendorandmisery #music #musicreview

Artist: Clipping
Album: Splendor and Misery (2016)
Label: Sub Pop
Pressing Info: Loser Edition (supposed to be clear. Ours has a blue and a yellow wisp that look pretty neat!)
Vinyl Share: Excellent hip hop/noise concept album about a slave taken by a race of alien captors, who explores inner/outer space, as well as feelings of loneliness and captivity. There is also cool sonic and lyrical parallelism with the American slave trade that really pushes this project to the next level. Excellent record! 🍇

Artists living in the Weimar Republic captured the stories of their contemporaries with an individual signature: the processing of World War I with depictions of maimed soldiers and “war profiteers,” public figures, and public uprising. This work "Agitator" was created by artist Kurt Querner in 1931. Thanks to the #Nationalgalerie of @staatlichemuseenzuberlin for this fantastic loan. SPLENDOR AND MISERY IN THEWEIMAR REPUBLIC is on view until 25 February. #schirn #glanzundelend #splendorandmisery #art #artlovers #artist #weimarrepublic #frankfurt #artwatchers

Another must-see exhibition! Brilliant art with an emphasis on forgotten female artists like Lotte Laserstein and Kate Diehn-Bitt (I‘d never heard of her). #glanzundelend #splendorandmisery #schirnkunsthalle #lottelaserstein #jeannemammen #katediehnbitt #femaleartists #weimarerrepublik

. @daveeddiggs I’m not even going to ask what you’re doing in this picture; just bring your and back to Durham. @clppng #splendorandmisery

The leading art movement in the Weimar Republic was called New Objectivity, characterized by a precise, realistic mode of painting and socially critical content, like in this portrait by artist Willy Geiger from 1927. Artists captured not merely the glitz of the ‘golden’ Twenties, but also the darker sides. In their works, the artists seem to have anticipated the inexorable failure of the first democratic government of Germany, long before political disaster actually happened. #glanzundelend #splendorandmisery #schirn #frankfurt #art #artlovers #weimarrepublic #portrait #painting #artwatchers
