I think I missed last week so I wanted to jump back in 🙃
This transformation is from a couple years back, but I wanted to depict what can happen from the first backbend of your practice towards the end.
The top picture was at the beginning of the shoot, I had taken class but probably a few hours before.
The second photo was towards the end of the shoot after a bunch of dropbacks, standing bows, camels, etc.
Lately I've been experiencing a lot more stiffness in the body (so my starting place is much more conservative), but I still get to observe this change throughout a practice.
If you're feeling constrained right now, you don't have to feel this way forever. Do the work, move slowly and mindfully and see what happens.
And if you have days where you still feel blocked (trust me, it happens 😅), then trust that you unblocked something in the mind or spirit instead 🌱

What's proper Jiu-jitsu posture?

When you are sitting in someone's closed guard you have one objective: ✅Clear their legs while not getting swept or submitted.
The ideal starting position is one where you can be safe from the guard player's attacks and are in good position to open the guard. Also when strikes are involved you want to place yourself in a position to strike effectively. .
What is proper jiu jitsu posture? Jiu jitsu posture is different from regular standing posture because there are different objectives. In jiu jitsu when you are sitting in someone's closed guard you are mainly resisting a forward pull from the guard player. ❇️To remain balanced you have to keep your center of mass between your base of support. .
If the guard player manages to pull your center of mass outside your base of support you will be unbalanced.

Initial posture: Tuck your tailbone underneath you (posterior pelvic tilt). When your pelvis tilts posteriorly it causes your spine to have slight flexion. The spinal and pelvic alignment puts you in a mechanical advantage to resist the guard player's anterior pulling force. Why? If you have neutral spinal alignment and they pull then you will be pulled into lumbar extension ie your center of mass will be much closer to the edge of your base of support. Therefore the force they will need to unbalance you will be considerably less. ✳️The most stable alignment is a neutral spinal with abdominal bracing, however if there is slight flexion it will not significantly decrease your stability.

When the opponent's pull increases or if they try a hip heist sweep to unbalance you posteriorly you can “engage your hips” meaning activating your glutes and slightly lifting your hips up to meet their increased force.

Learn how to control your spine ✔️
▪️ The deadbug is typically thought of as a rehab exercise, but it can be used in a training setting as well
▪️ It is a great exercise to practice maintaining a neutral and stable/braced spine while moving through the hips. The key is being able to dissociate hip movement from lowback/pelvic movement, which a lot of people find difficult
▪️ To load the exercise and make it a bit more challenging, here are a couple options:
🔹TOP: hold a kettlebell or weight slightly behind you. This will ask more from your core, as you must resist the weight wanting to flare your ribcage up and losing your braced core. Down below, keep the low back flat on the ground. Slowly move your leg out, not letting your low back come off the ground and arch. Repeat
🔹 BOTTOM: this one will really fire your core up. Pull a band over (use a good amount of resistance) and feel your core automatically engage. Hold this position and do your deadbugs in the same manner

Pillows are not just for your head and neck. Depending on your sleeping position, additional pillows can help keep your spine in the proper position. The pillow for your head should support the natural curve of your neck and be comfortable. A pillow that's too high can put your neck into a position that causes muscle strain on your back, neck, and shoulders. ·
Choose a pillow that will keep the neck aligned with the chest and lower back. Your pillow should be adjustable to allow you to sleep in different positions. Replace your pillows every year or so.

If you sleep on your back, a small pillow under the back of your knees will reduce stress on your spine and support the natural curve in your lower back. The pillow for your head should support your head, the natural curve of your neck, and your shoulders.

If you sleep on your side, a firm pillow between your knees or waist will prevent your upper leg from pulling your spine out of alignment and reduce stress on your hips and lower back. Pull your knees up slightly toward your chest. The pillow for your head should keep your spine straight. A rolled towel or small pillow under your waist may also help support your spine.

Biceps tendinitis is an inflammation or irritation of the upper biceps tendon. Also called the long head of the biceps tendon, this strong, cord-like structure connects the biceps muscle to the bones in the shoulder.

Pain in the front of the shoulder and weakness are common symptoms of biceps tendinitis. In severe cases, surgery may be needed to repair the tendon.

In most cases, damage to the biceps tendon is due to a lifetime of normal activities. As we age, our tendons slowly weaken with everyday wear and tear. This degeneration can be worsened by overuse — repeating the same shoulder motions again and again.

Many jobs and routine chores can cause overuse damage. Sports activities — particularly those that require repetitive overhead motion, such as swimming, tennis, and baseball can also put people at risk for biceps tendinitis.

Repetitive overhead motion may play a part in other shoulder problems that occur with biceps tendinitis.
