The serratus wall slide. An exercise used to target the often weak and underactive serratus anterior. The serratus anterior will play a big role in scapular stability and coordination with overhead and reaching activities. Here are some of the “dos” ✅ for the serratus wall slide.

✅ - With this version of the wall slide - I am using a foam roller to help coordinate the movement. During the slide I am trying to press my forearm into the roller while reaching up overhead. This will protract (round the shoulder blade) the scapula and effectively target the serratus anterior. Maintain the pressure into the foam roller while reaching up overhead.

Be sure that you do not arch your low back with reaching overhead. Be sure to maintain a neutral pelvis position and core tension.

Another big cue is to try and avoid medially rotating your shoulder at the top. Keep your hand in neutral position or slightly laterally rotated. If medial rotation is seen - your palm will turn down towards the wall. This is the biggest mistake that I often make with this exercise. Staying away from this medial rotation will reduce the activation of the lats.

Reaching overhead has a lot of moving parts. Not only do you need to have good control/motion at the shoulder joint, but also the scapula (shoulder blade) needs to effectively upwardly rotate. If the shoulder blade does not upwardly rotate, the humeral head may be asked to do “too much”, which may lead to pain and irritation. Be sure to start slow, maintain good alignment, and give it a shot. Let me know if you have any questions!

Even though this may look "relatively" smooth, this posture took a lot of patience, work outside of the posture to open up the shoulders and the spine, and still feels a little bit like someone's stabbing me in the kidney haha 😅
I can post some of those exercises and my warm-up stretches tomorrow!

Dec 2 & 3, 2016 first night sleeping with no halo after 8 months. It was extremely painful. The scapula pain, and pain in my spine was unreal. When I was in the halo I kept telling my physical therapists & my shoulder surgeon I know I have a scapular muscle detachment but there is something new going on that I haven't had before. Without the halo on this pain was intensified. It felt like I was being tazored every time I breathed or moved a few millimeters. The scapular/spine pain would drop me to my knees. I would find out what that new pain was when I had scapular surgery on December 8, 2016. One thing to know when you're in a halo brace long is that you sustain a lot of muscle atrophy. I also lost a lot of weight; almost 20 lbs. 😲
