N found this big chrysalis in the soil today while digging a new potato patch. Don't know for sure, but I believe it's going to become a hawkmoth! #sphingidae #svärmare #puppa #chrysalis #pupa

Looking forward to keeping Manduca sexta again! This was when I kept them a few years back. This one was perched on my thumb to pump its wings. Took a whole half hour! My hand was cramping towards the end but it was worth it :) #Entomology #Lepidoptera #Sphingidae #Manduca #Manducasexta

Found a ~8cm moth individual of what I believe is a(n unfortunately) dead Eumorpha achemon (achemon sphinx) on my way to work the other day. Smerinthus ophthalmica (Western one-eyed sphinx) resting on a window during our Indian Island Marine Health Observatory "Food for Thought" sustainable seafood event at The Barnacle yesterday. These large moths are found throughout the islands, particularly near wooded wetlands where willows provide an abundant larval food source.

🔻Binomial/Scientific name: Daphnis nerii
🔺Origin: South Mediterranean
-
These two are a pair of adult female Oleandee Hawkmoths that can be in Southern Europe, the Mediterranean and far right into South East Asia. Adult moths feed from flowers at night using their long proboscis ("tongue") and hovering above much like a hummingbird.
.
Young larvae are completely lime-green with no markings but as they grow older, the larvae develop large blue/white/purple eyespot near the head along with a band of blue/white spots that run along the side of the body.
