Todays post outlines a general off-season prep plan for the 'quick little fecker'' playing up front...think Jamie Vardy! 🏃

Again, we take into account the realities of professional/semi-pro level in Ireland whereby time & resources for players may be limited, but the opportunity for gains is always available 🏋🏐🎯

••••A JOCKEY DOESN'T BENCH PRESS A HORSE TO TRY WIN A RACE•••• The glitter & dust option as an S&C coach would be to launch into full on Olympic Lifting & Explosive Squats but to prioritise career progression & injury prevention on top of developing strength/speed, a solid approach for these particular forwards would be as follows;

DO THE SIMPLE THINGS & DO THEM WELL;

1. Develop/Coach unloaded bilateral/unilateral squat pattern
2. Progress & assess technique by increasing load gradually. ⚽

GOOD MOVEMENT; GOOD TECHNIQUE; GOOD CONTROL all take priority over driving STRENGTH as the load increases👍

3. Develop/coach jumping technique...measuring starting position/ execution & finish of hip/knee/toe utilisation & NOT just the height of the jump because it looks good on video! ⚽

THE EXERCISES OUTLINED DON'T REQUIRE FANCY EQUIPMENT; GPS; HEART MONITORS; LIFE SUPPORT MACHINES etc for a coach...a camera on a phone to assist feedback on form/technique to the player will tick the box ✔

Similar to the wide players, the quick striker doesn't need big bulk & the coaching process over the winter months can target a progression to moderate LOAD (e.g 30-40kg) to prepare these twinkle toes for pre-season with a fresh base to continue build strength/speed 🎖

• Easy Load bilateral Squats x 12*
• Easy Load Unilateral Squat x 6 (R & L)*
• multi-directional/plane box jumps 3 sets x 8 *PROGRESSION TO MODERATE LOAD x 8* 👍

The schedule @ the top level for players in the Airtricity League is demanding. The full training/matchday programme runs from January right through to October & as stated before is completed in the balance along with college/work/family & a social life as well 🏡⚽📖

The majority of players with 1st Division clubs will have made a jump from either Schoolboy/National League U-17's-19's level & this step up can happen when the player has already completed an entire season & is now practicing at a higher level of intensity 🛌

Experience in the gym room can be varied if at all non-existent.

THE OFF SEASON IS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO REST & RESET. BELOW IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW AN S&C COACH CAN ASSIST A PLAYER TO PLAN & PROGRESS IN THE GYM ROOM THROUGHOUT THE WINTER MONTHS; 🏋🏃⚽ ● 2 week total break ● Restart with Postural & functional movement assessment
● Outline mobility/corrective exercise programme
● Progress with resistance programme relative to mobility & individual requirements & developing movement patterns required for foundation strength
● Re-assess & Re-evaluate

THE ABOVE STAGE OF GYM BASED RESISTANCE SHOULD STAND AS A BUILDING BLOCK TOWARDS SPECIFIC BIAS FOR THE INDIVIDUALS POSITION

I'll use the example of a full back & wide player (such as @jamesbrown5588 & @adamevans94 both pictured ☺) These particular positions do not require massive bulk so structural hypertrophy can be avoided. A strength plan as detailed below is one simple example of a programme which would suit wide players; ● Trapbar Deadlift ● Barbell front squat with progression to jump
● SL weighted step ups
● Pull Ups

Progression including;
● Box jumps
● Plyometrics

EACH PERFORMED AT MEDIUM INTENSITY & BUILDING OVER A 3/4 WEEK PERIOD; THIS FEEDS INTO AEROBIC/ANEROBIC OFF-SEASON SESSIONS & HELPS THE ATHLETE BE STRONG & FRESH FOR JANUARY.

I still hear many coaches today yelling and screaming out to their athletes what I call "Empty Directions!" Empty directions are phrases like "work harder, You need to give better effort, don't quit, run faster," etc. When coaching young kids for speed you must give them precise and exact instructions. Multi-movement drills should be done carefully and specifically and technically. If you're too busy rushing through for conditioning drills then you get to practice how to move and inefficiently while being fatigue physically and mentally when changing directions. Foot placement, balance and timing of the transition point for changing directions is vital for changing directions quickly. Here we are rehearsing patience while practicing foot placement body balance and upper body position before acceleration out of a transition.
