😂 seriously the most accurate description of what it’s like to be a teacher.

CAN you tag one of those friends? #friendship #friends #slpeeps #spedteachers

My team keeps me going!!!!! I have always been the type that tries to tackle things alone. When I started to let people in, I found people just freaking like me!!! #spedteachers #disneyobsessed #anxiousaf #hapababies #converseloving #adhdmoms #almost40

I had spent so long trying to "fit in" with people that weren't really my people....they were just the only people my introverted self knew. Oh my tribe has shown me that I can be loved just the way I am and I am forever grateful for discovering that ME is more than good enough!!! Celebrating my Friday workout and genuine HAPPINESS with this amazing shirt made with love by @morapp !!! #teammatesforlife #teamkeepingitreal #fridaylove

WE ARE COLLEGE BOUND!!! .
.
It has been a super looooooong week at work and I’ve found myself getting a little discouraged. But today was the final day of college week and to celebrate we watched videos of inclusive college programs. Seeing these dudes in their college tees watching people JUST LIKE THEM at college was the BEST reminder of why I work so hard right now with and for these friends. I’m so excited for their long term futures and grateful for places like @rubysrainbow and @nextstepsatvanderbilt for paving the way for my students! This was exactly the encouragement I needed to flip my attitude around. My kids are absolutely amazing, and I can’t wait to watch them crush their goals, and shatter stereotypes about what people with different abilities can do. If you need a pick me up go watch the video I posted in the screen shot. My paras and I were maaaaayyyybbbeeee crying on our carpet circle 😂

Sometimes it feels a little comical that I’m tasked with the responsibility to teach little humans how to identify their feelings and cope with their feelings using healthy, productive strategies.
.
.
Me. The girl who dealt with her feelings by eating bags of Cheez-it’s and throwing back glass after glass of wine at happy hour.
.
.
But then it also feels so freaking appropriate. Because it’s just a message to our little ones that we ALL go through a range of emotions. All the time. For our whole life. It’s not a phase that we just pass through. And it’s not something that we ever fully master. We are constantly faced with new triggers and have to continue to add to and pull from our toolbox.
.
.
It seems like, in order to teach something, you must be an “expert” in that area. The reality is, I’m not an expert. I’m a student myself. I’m still adding to my toolbox. I’m still pulling out strategies I haven’t used in a while to see if they will work this time around.
.
.
And you know what? I think showing that to my little ones will help me become a better teacher.

Every day at school, I travel with my flexy and scribble down ideas - as they come to me - that I need to do for the classroom, in regard to my organization system, for the paperwork portion of this job, in my communication with teachers. And, every day, as I leave each of my groups, I walk away with a post-it of ideas on how I can make it better the next time around.
.
.
By the end of the day, I’ve got about 20 post-its spilling out of my flexy and I’m tasked with the challenge of figuring out how the heck to prioritize the zillions of things I want/need to do.
.
.
Great! We put up a visual checklist for a group and it was successful. But, after implementing it one time with my kids, I realized that item #2 needs a little more structure and it would benefit my babies if I had pictures of the rules placed near the carpet. Great! I finished a lesson using the curriculum but, man, it would be so nice for the kids if they had a number line in front of them so they can conceptualize everything.
.
.
But then there are also other random tasks that get thrown my way. Things that would be nice. And would make people feel good. But take away time from what I should be focusing on.
.
.
I can’t do everything NOW. And I don’t have a prep period. So any few minutes of time that I can devote to a task off this ever-growing list of to-dos should be super high yield and should be something that will DIRECTLY benefit my kids.
.
.
Don’t let people trick you into believing that anything else is more important. Sure, some things - especially SpED related - have deadlines and timelines and legal requirements you have to keep on top of.
.
.
But don’t fall into the trap of doing something because you feel like you have to. Just look at each task and ask yourself, “What are the top few things I can turn around before tomorrow that will be most beneficial to my students?”
.
.
And, most important, we have to constantly remind ourselves that we aren’t unsuccessful because we don’t have it all figured out yet. On the contrary, what we are doing is just being present in each moment and identifying what will take it one step further with our kids the next day. Just being good teachers. ❤

One of the things I hear teachers tell me frequently is that they can't find "the" reinforcer for a student. But really, there isn't a "perfect" reinforcer that works all the time. That's why we have to work to find multiple reinforcers to switch it up. .

mini succulents + inspirational Rae Dunn for my paras who’ve jumped right in and worked so hard with all our new kiddos the last few weeks!! They’ve also made me lunch, make me laugh every day and I love watching them love and teach our kids! My class is the luckiest 😍😍😍

Put all my task boxes in matching bins and I am REALLY feeling like I’ve got my life together 🤩🤩🤩 (at least for the 3 seconds it stayed looking like this!) *contents in this photo appear much more organized/put together lthan they actually are

I’m determined to get these babies talking about ALL SORTS of feelings. But, truthfully, it’s challenging given that I’ve got some kids with severe speech/language deficits.
.
.
But, we’ve got emojis and Inside Out characters and, at the very least, they can point to an emoji or a character they identify with in that moment. And hopefully, over time, we will practice strategies to help them cope with overwhelming feelings.
.
.
Today we practiced some balloon breathing. With every strategy practiced, we will post pictures up in our safe space to remind them that there are always tools we can use.
.
.
If anyone has additional suggestions, I’m all ears. Gimme ALL the ideas for your safe spaces and calm down corners! 👇🏽
