Well, that wasn't happening.
My split is definitely not a square one, so my aligment is compromised and I really didn't get much of backend.
But I spend most of yoga time I had today working on a backbend including bending in lunges. So I hope hard work cancels out those not so good photos.

I am so inspired by @eternalpriyan for his delicated teachings and wealth of wisdom shared during essential class @npschoolofyoga. The practice was so mindful and I feel so balance after class. A gratitude of thankfulness @eternalpriyan.

For this week theme, #kuntasana or #spearpose, I find it so apt and timely especially in my pratice the past two weeks.

Even since I injuried my lower left lumber back, 4 wks ago... I thought of opening my hips (internal & external rotation) and quads - as I was under tremendous stress that's stored in my hips (in theory). The defining movement of #Kuntasana or #spearpose is the deep flexion of your knee to achieve a hip flexor and quad stretch and decompression of knee and ankle joints. I tried to concentrate on bringing my foot as close as possible while keeping my hips square and pushing them down to create that straight line Carmen was talking about.

The Backbend was kinda not happening. I had enough trouble getting this far. .

My knee was fine, but my quads were screaming!

Announcing November’s #yogachallenge #Yoga4x7!!! This challenge is DIFFERENT than usual because we’ll be working towards 4 peak poses, every Tuesday, taking 7 days to build up to each of them (hence the 4x7, notice the different rim color for Tuesdays?). Each peak pose is purposely, very different from the others, so each week it’ll feel like a mini-challenge in itself (yet to win, you’d still have to complete the whole thing!). Instead of working on one theme, think of this challenge as a ‘sample box’ 📦 where we’ll cover a wider variety of asanas in a less amount of days. The idea is to switch it up and go from strengthening to backbends, hip openers, splits, inversions and back, in 28 days. Two VERY good things about this challenge are: 1) it’ll be much less likely you’ll get tired of it (no time!), 2) you’ll be able to ‘take the pulse’ on your practice and determine what it is you need to work on more and where you’re at in each family of poses. Gosh, it feels great to be back on IG and on my mat!! ❤️ I can't say this intense lunge stretch was easy nor was keeping the foot hooked at the hips and below. I practiced the challenge pose on both sides and eventually went down into a #split .

I couldn't keep my foot hooked but this was the first time I got it that close to my foot and where it should go in the full pose. The stretch in the hip flexor was intense!! My right side is tighter than my left which I already knew.

A great pose to keep you working, I tell you. There’s the quadstretch that’s no joke, you can always deepen the backbend, or the hipopening and when you do so it throws you out of balance. Luckily my knees have no issues with this pose. What a lovely complexity and so much to do. I added a picture of a prep pose Anjaneyasana just because I love how the light seems to emerge from my throat chakra.

It's been a while since I've done an insta challenge but I thought I would give it a go and see if it helps me to practice more regularly 💕💕💕 Here goes DAY 1 of #yoga4x7 with @cyogalab it was definitely a #kuntasana 😂🙈 did lots of lunge variations, 1 legged splits and a few back bends before coming into it. I can't get my foot to my hip yet so had to hold it. Felt deeper with support from front thigh.

#spearpose EPIC FAIL and I'm ok with that. My knees and legs joints just don't bend this way and it is hard for me.
I think meditation is a personal thing. By that, I mean you have to find what works for you. I quiet my mind and concentrate on my breath first then I slowly let go and turn in. Chakra works well too.

For me I'm still new into meditating as a form of managing my mental health. I know people who have said that meditation seriously has changed their lives and helped with their anxiety/depression so I think that if it works for you, then go for it!

How does it feel?
I hate it. My knees hate it. 🤣

And I live for my night time meditation. Incense, candles, singing bowls, crystals, my big fluffy floor cushion... quiet.
It's literally the only time I can experience absolute silence all day.. cars aren't roaring by outside. Kds aren't playing basketball in the street. Everyone has gone to bed... This is my time to shine bb.
I love to throw in a bit of restorative practice while listening to Sanskrit mantras. Talk about relaxation 😍
Meditation had a huge impact on my mental well being. Maybe not at first but when I began to take it seriously I found immediate benefits.
I was more calm. More positive. Setting daily intentions. Getting things done.

Today's #YogaForMentalHealthAwareness2 pose is #spearpose which my son, who was my photographer today (Hubby took the daughter to a Girl Scouts event.), loved this pose. He says I look like a fierce warrior who's ready to fight. 😊 For today's discussion... Do you use meditation? To be honest, I don't meditate nearly as much as I should. I have a hard time staying still mentally, so of course I should do it more, but it's ironically why I don't. BUT, since I have anxiety and am an #empath so I feel my emotions to a greater degree than most people, I did train myself to use my breath as a tool for calming down. Once, when I was in a particularly uncomfortable hip stretch in a class, the teacher told us to send our breath to the spot that's giving us difficulty and it'll help. Honestly, at first I thought she was full of shit and crazy new-agey. But then I tried it, and I found that it seriously worked! So I started using this technique when I was at work. I was in a very difficult work situation for several years (I taught MS English), and my admins would constantly throw things at me that made me furious and want to quit. So i started using this technique when dealing with them or preparing for a meeting with them. I would repeat over in my head, "Send your breath to your heart." And little by little it would calm me enough to not tell my bosses to go fuck themselves. 😊 So this is kinda my version of meditating in a way. Now I just use it when I'm stressing or worrying or overthinking something and driving myself crazy. 😊

***i love this pose, i did it last year in one of the challenges as yogi's choice. Not gifted in there to hook my foot so i did a variation 😜, and added a tiptoe for a change.💪🏻👍🏻
***Meditation...i've trying to add that to my routine but i always fail.😔I even purchased an App for that but the only thing that worked was the sleep meditation. So for now, it's just counting 1- 10, while deeply inhaling and exhaling is all i could do when I'm upset or angry, until the negative feelings ebbed away. I listen to music also, watch videos of cats and dogs, or pictures of flowers and butterflies.😊😀🙏🏻 Hosts:

Welcome to the second round of our “Yoga For Mental Health Awareness” challenge!

Last time we gave you an open book. This time we've set poses so you can instead learn to hear your body.

For Day 18 we are bringing you "Spear Pose". This is a kind of low lunge with foot hooked in any way possible to the torso. Women have an advantage here in the form of boobs as shown by my pose 😂 but *ideally* the foot hooks just above the hip.

A modification would be to hold the foot as near to the torso as you can comfortably and keep hold of the foot with your hand. .

HOW DOES IT FEEL? Personally I love this kind of stretch and challenge. In intense pose for the legs in particular.

DISCUSSION OF THE DAY: What meditations do you practice (if any)? Are there any you can recommend? Do you think chakra meditations help mental health? Or do meditations advertised for anxiety/depression/mental illness help? Can just meditating on the breath be enough to completely turn your mental wellbeing around?

I adore progress photos. When we are on a journey, it is easy to see how far we have left to go and we often forget how far we have come, how much progress we have made. The photo on the left is from one of my first yoga challenges, back in June 2016. I remember gritting my teeth, stuggling to get into this terrible modified spear pose, telling my husband to get the picture before I fell out of it. Now, I can easily do the modification with better form and I can do a full spear pose, although it is still difficult to balance for very long. A sign that there is still progress to be made. I'll always be learning and growing.
