Wanna know why we're to bent on fixing cats... it's heartbreaking to trap, neuter and return a kitten to the street and there just aren't enough adopters for all the kittens.
A total of 7 of the 25 kittens we trapped Friday night were kittens. We can't absorb all the kittens. That means we have to weigh up the risk at the location and make very hard choices.
If you're considering fostering or adopting, we hope you remember, adoption isn't about shopping for the perfect "plug & play" dog or cat, it's about saving a life.
We wouldn't be forced to make these tough choices if the animal welfare community prioritized #spayneuter and focused on the REAL breeding ground in almost every city across the country, the street.
Denver started a groundbreaking effort to provide FREE spay/neuter to every cat and kitten, with no restrictions. Here in LA we have zip code restrictions, income restrictions, a limit on how many cats an individual can fix for free, stray or "free roaming" cats, the greatest breeders, don't qualify in almost all circumstances except for 1 clinic, FixNation.
Adoptions, kitten nurseries, working cat programs, out of state transport are all heroic efforts to help, but if fixing one female cat prevents about 12-16 kittens from facing a life on the street or ever ending up in a shelter, why can't think differently about where we're investing our time and 💵. Sure cats and dogs are a "revenue stream" for pet businesses, but shelters and rescues should be a safety net, not a dumping ground.
No matter where you live, do a search and throw your support behind the small and big rescue efforts dedicated to saving kittens by fixing cats. TNR, high volume spay/neuter isn't glam, but it offers the greatest impact.
