Morgestraich, the magical moment at 4 a.m. when Basel Carnival starts - all the lights go out in the city centre and everything is only illuminated by lanterns. I remember my first Morgestraich as a 6 or 7 year old, walking next to my piccolo playing dad in his clique. And while I do not like all aspects of Fasnacht anymore as much I used to, the magic of Morgestraich still gives me goosebumps even if I haven't made it back home for that in years. Wandering the small medival alleys of Basel, hearing the sounds of the piccolos and drums resonating between the walls while fantastic creatures appear at every turn just to end up next to the cathedral on Münsterplatz to watch the sunrise over the Rhine after hours of walking outside is just something very special, an atmosphere that cannot be explained, powerful and delicate at the same time.
