Album: Dark Souls Original Soundtrack
Artist(s): Motoi Sakuraba
Label: Spacelab9 (@spacelab9), 2017
Games: Dark Souls
A few years back, when VGM vinyl were really starting to take off again, one of the most requested soundtracks were those for the Dark Souls series. Fortunately for all those hoping for it to come out - it did! Summer last year Spacelab9 put out all three titles in the series, but let's start with the first one.
I should probably start out with saying I haven't played any of the Dark Souls games, so I can't really connect the music to the game because of that. However, musically we're in orchestral territory - it's dark and ominous, but not without the occasional beauty. Particularly the song "Gwyn, Lord Of Cinder" is a sad yet beautiful piano track. There are also several tracks the makes great use of choir such as "Great Grey Wolf Sif" and "Nameless Song". The pressing has been given quite some criticism, but aside from some frustrating pops early on side A, I didn't experience any notable noise or crackle whatsoever and quite enjoyed the pressing. Reports on the quality are mixed, though, so your mileage may vary.
The packaging for this release is fairly standard gatefold featuring art from the game. It's a 2LP and have been released in a few different color variants now. My copy here is the "Blue Eye Orb" variant which is limited to 100 copies, which sold out quite fast. There are other color variants still available and even the sold out variants are usually reasonably priced on Discogs as well.
