UFOs in Art, Part 3
______________ "Madonna and Child with the Infant St John", or simply "Madonna of the UFO", is a painting of an unknown origin, however, it is speculated that it dates back to 15th or 16th century. It was most likely painted by either Sebastiano Mainardi or Jacopo del Sellaio. There are also speculations that it was painted by neither of those two, but someone else.
The painting is round and adorned with a golden frame. It depicts the usual iconographic motif of the Renaissance: in the front, the Virgin is kneeling in prayer, while baby Jesus is reaching with his hand toward his mother, with the help of St. John who is supporting him. But what is the topic of many conspiracy theories and UFO theories, is the object hidden in the back of the painting, which looks similar to today's mainstream depiction of flying saucers. There is also a shepherd painted next to his dog, with both of them looking up towards the mysterious object.
Skeptics and art historians believe that the object is actually an angel, bearing the appearance of a luminous cloud and to further prove their theory, they argue that the shepherd and his pet looking up towards the Angel coming out of a cloud, is a popular motif in many paintings of the Catholic faith.
Today, the Madonna of the UFO can be seen in the Hall of Hercules at the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy.
