I have been asked several times by readers lately what protein powder I recommend. I don’t personally use protein powders myself anymore. I have concluded that protein powders are unhealthy, processed and unnecessary.
Isolated protein powders made from soy, whey, casein and egg whites are generally obtained by a high temperature process that over-denatures the proteins to such an extent that they become virtually useless, while increasing nitrates and other carcinogens. Protein powders are often consumed as part of a low-fat diet and can thereby lead to depletion of vitamin A, D, E and K reserves in the body. Soy protein isolates are high in mineral blocking phytates, thyroid depressing phytoestrogens, and potent enzyme Inhibitors that depress growth and cause cancer.
Frequent consumption of unnatural isolated protein powders have been proven to cause a negative calcium balance that can lead to osteoporosis.
Animal products are important natural sources of bodybuilding elements in the diet. Animal fats supply vitamin A and D and is rich in minerals, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 needed for healthy body methylation processes, metabolism and hormone balance. Animal protein foods always come naturally with fat and this is how they should be eaten. Animal fat allows vitamins A and D to be metabolized in the body since these vitamins are fat soluble, so fat is needed for the assimilation of protein. Consuming a high protein but low-fat diet can lead to serious deficiencies and imbalances of these vital fat soluble nutrients.
Cooking meat on the bone in a broth creates a complete protein. Muscle meats alone are high in methionine but cooked with the bones adds gelatin, proline and glycine and completes the natural amino acid profile. Organic Grass-fed, free Pasteur meats are best.
