yesterday, two hours too late, we realized that we’d missed our turn for the northwest coast. us passengers shrugged - the whole South Island is paradise, who cares if our plans shift around? but my brother-in-law, captain of our trusty house-on-wheels, was devastated. the northwest was where he was most excited to show me especially. we love to nerd out over geology together, and the northwest is waves of precipitous limestone cliffs interspersed with greenstone beaches and pancake rocks. ‘this will be worth it’, he exclaimed with a grin as he swung the wheel right, taking us a full day off course just to show me something he knew I’d love. the other passengers may have been doubting this decision ‘just to go look at some rocks’, but after a midnight spelunking adventure to find a secret glow worm cavern and waking up to this view, they weren’t rolling their eyes anymore.
