William Edmondson was an African-American folk art sculptor. In 1937 Edmondson was the first African-American artist to be given a one-person show at MoMA. He was one of six children of freed slaves Orange and Jane Edmondson. This sculpture park in Nashville also has work by Lonnie Holley and Thornton Dial. #WilliamEdmondson#MoMA#arthistory#southernfolkart
I have always loved this photograph of two Oklahoma sharecroppers taken over 100 years ago. I love their smiles and their ability to find joy in what was no doubt a difficult situation. It's so inspiring. I would like to do a painting of them one day.
