I awoke this morning with my brothers whispering in my soul. My kinsmen are often silenced by a vigorously empowered sisterhood and a system of emasculation. Especially my brothers of colour. The battle in which they are engaged in is an invisible killer on many levels.
The saddest reality is that most of us do not even know how utterly usurped we are. There are the many layers of scrotal twisting. There are the complexities of roles, expectations, obligations, mind games and sacrifices that are demanded of us which are determined by the shade and hue of the skin we wear.
There are the silent auctions going on in homes wrapped around marriage and all that entails. There is the financial burdens laid upon backs that cannot sustain the weight and yet when mental fragility cracks, weakness is the abuse to handle this.
Fatherhood is a cluster bomb. Husbandry is an exercise of self flaggelation. The signs on the path of a male of colour is so confusing that any attempt is regarded as a failure. And the queens are the most painful of all. How does a man pay for the indiscretions of the many?
Every brother knows what I mean. It's a battle that no one prepared us for. How do you navigate stormy seas when there wasn't an example of a father to guide? How does a boy learn to accept himself healthily without a worthy companion to show him who he is? How does he make sense of a world where his identity is twisted by the laws of racism and despotism?
That l am able to write these words in this manner is proof of self determination and perseverance because my father was missing in action by no fault of his own. It's a miracle that many of my kinsmen are able to show up and become.
This poem is a remembering of who we are as men in general and as men of colour in particular. For this week, I am honouring my brothers with a series of images and poetic texture called 'Nubian Male Notes'. We are deserving of attention and intention with no pretention. This is an appreciation of mybbrothers of colour. I celebrate us with every fibre of my being.
