Was very excited to check out Redwood Empire American Whiskey from Graton Distilling in Sonoma County, as it's one of the more unique American blends I've heard of recently, very much in the High West category-bending image.
It's 60% self distilled rye at 2 and 3 years old, including selections finished in port and wine casks. The remainder is sourced bourbon, at 11, 5, and 4 years old.
So there's a lot of moving pieces here. Inviting, fruity nose with honey and apples, some rich sweetness with both vanilla, chocolate, and dark red fruits on the palate. But a bit soft and disjointed, with a tannic finish.
Overall, promising stuff and will be eager to continue watching this distillery.
