You cannot out-give God.
I was saved when I was 19 years old. And I remember as a new christian walking into the office of our church and giving the pastor my tithe. He looked me in the eyes and said, "You are going to know God." It was a personal word for me. One that I cherished, although didn't fully understand at the time.
We are called to give.
We are called to be like our heavenly Father. Every day He gives us breath. Every day he gives us food. Shelter from the rain. Rain.
God's very nature is one of giving. To love is to give. And all creation tells the story of an abundant God. The Creator of the heavens and the earth. An earth full of myriads of creatures both large and small.
Tithing is an old testament practice that was tied to the economic and worship structure of the nation of Israel. And in that sense, tithing remains as a part of the way Israel was called to operate.
However, the principle and spirit of tithing remain for us as christians. New testament followers. The principle is that we should GIVE GENEROUSLY, and 10% is a good start. And that this giving is a part of our worship. A part of our praise. A part of our giving back to the One who has given His all for us.
And the spirit of tithing is the spirit of faith. Faith that He who began a good work in us will bring it to completion. Faith that He will indeed throw open the windows of heaven and pour out a magnificent blessing upon our lives.
A blessing that we cannot contain. A blessing that will flow in and through us to others. So that we may truly be, "Blessed to be a blessing." So give. Tithe. But do these in faith. Eyes firmly fixed on Jesus. From whom, and through whom, all blessings flow.
