Hola, Chile! Outside an artisans shop in ultracool San Pedro de Atacama, a town set on an arid high plateau in the Andes mountains of northeastern Chile. Its dramatic surrouding landscape incorporates desert, salt flats, volcanoes, geysers and hot springs. The Valle de la Luna in the nearby Los Flamencos National Reserve is a lunarlike depression with unusual rock formations, a huge sand dune and pink-streaked mountains. Told you! Lots to see.....#semanachileña gets rolling!

More stunning, otherworldly scenery from the incredible Atacama Desert in Northern Chile. The Atacama is a plateau in South America, covering a 1,000-kilometre (600 mi) strip of land on the Pacific coast of #Chile, west of the Andes mountains. It is the driest non-polar desert in the world.

Regrann from @realcocosfloat - The Curonian Spit, named after one of the early Baltic tribes that inhabited the region, is a curious place. A 60 mile-long finger of sand that stretches upwards from Russian Kaliningrad to within a handshake of the Lithuanian mainland, separating the waters of the Baltic Sea from the Curonian lagoon. The northern 32 miles of this peninsula belong to Lithuania, accessed by ferry from the port of Klaipeda. Make the short hop across the strait and you reach a National Park and Unesco World Heritage Site of astonishing beauty. #beaches #blueflag #UNESCO

Labas rytas, Lithuania! A quick howdy to the small city of #Klaipeda and a visit to the Old Market (Senasis Turgus). The classic Lithuanian market experience, this predominantly outdoor affair is the place to come for exotic Chinese underpants, ill-fitting sweaters and, towards the back, meat, fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants. The whole area is surrounded by shops and bars with real character. The older part of the market at the back, in Turgaus Aikštė, is just like stepping back into the past complete with imposing Germanic buildings and metal telegraph poles that must be at least 70 years old. Worth a look around even if you don’t need to buy anything. No dawdling though, we are in Lithuania for a reason: to visit the Curonian Spit! #staytuned #lietuviu

Regrann from @realcocosfloat - Making a quick phone call from the warden’s desk at the old #Karosta Prison. The prison was built around the turn of the 19th/20th century as part of a large military complex. "Karosta" means 'war harbour' – so it's mainly a naval base. Originally constructed by the Russian Tsar to improve control over the area. Later, the Soviet Union took over – and frequently incarcerated political prisoners here. During WWII and the occupation of #Latvia by Germany, the Nazis turned the place into their own detention centre and execution site.
After the defeat of Germany, the Soviets were back and used the base as one of the most important naval bases for their #Baltic Fleet all through the Cold War. The KGB continued to use the prison until they had to abandon the place after the collapse of the Soviet empire and Latvia's regaining independence. For a few years, the new Latvian state also continued to use the prison, though on somewhat less drastic scale, and in 1997 it was finally given up altogether. It’s a pretty cool #museum now, and still very, very spooky.

Regrann from @realcocosfloat - The St Nicholas Naval Cathedral (Latvian: Sv. Nikolaja Jūras katedrāle) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located in the area known as Karosta in the north of #Liepāja in #Latvia. Karosta was constructed in 1890-1906 as a naval base for the Russian Tsar Alexander III, and later served as a base for the Soviet Baltic Fleet. During Soviet occupation of Latvia, the entire area of #Karosta (an entire one third of the city of Liepāja) was considered closed territory and was off limits even to the citizens of Liepāja. When the Russian army left Latvia in 1994 after Latvian independence, Karosta became largely uninhabited and most structures fell to ruin. In late 1990s, the area was troubled by unemployment, street crime and drug problems. Today, it is a vibrant community and home to the K@2 Arts Center. #enjoylatvia #coolbaltics #visitlatvia

Retrace the tracks of rail history in #Latvia in this museum run by Latvian Railways (Latvijas dzelzceļš). Inside the brick hangar you'll find old photographs, antiquated machines and a few specimens of old wagons. Outside you view the largest collection of rolling stock in the #Baltics which includes a restored Soviet diesel and electric locomotives built in Ukraine and Russia as well as a German locomotive built in 1942 that no doubt became a spoil of war. Don’t miss the Tsarist era prison car. #trains

These lovely Latvian ladies are hanging out in Bastejkaina Park, in downtown #Rīga, practicing on their kokles. The #kokles is an ancient Baltic string instrument that has been around a long time! The first possible kokles related archeological findings in the territory of modern #Latvia are from the 13th century. #Kokle music helped Latvians to maintain their national pride during almost five decades of Soviet occupation after World War II, when kokle players gathered together in song festivals and other concerts, dressed up in national costumes. During the Soviet occupation, kokles were made at a Rīga musical instrument factory, mainly from leftover materials used for pianos. #uniquemusic
