As lawyers we must always lead with COMPASSION. THE most important element of being a lawyer is counseling our clients and advocating for them. This doesn’t always happen in our work product or in the courtroom, a lot of the time it happens in our offices sitting across the table from them. It is our duty to; guide them, support them, help them understand the process, and to show compassion. We must truly care for our clients if we want to help them with their situations.
Building the business as a solo becomes your number one priority. The firm may take up 50% of your life. Within the business there are probably 20 things taking up your time. Only 1 of 20 things is your book of clients. So if you have 10 clients, then one person is just 1/10th of your book. Meaning they are 1/10th of 1/20th of your firm. With your firm being 50% of your life that client may only be 1% of all you’re doing!
Considering that each client may only be one percent of the things you are managing, the same is not true for them. A client’s reason for sitting across the table from you may be because something is consuming 100% of their life. Of course we can’t always drop everything for our clients, as we have to be cautious of our time. But at the VERY LEAST, you should always show compassion for them and try to understand how they are taking it. Remember, without clients, we have no business, so be kind, be humble, be grateful and always LEAD WITH COMPASSION!
