Are you dressed in Saint Lucia's National Creole Wear today?
Read below to know more about the roots of our lovely wear:

The national or creole dress has it origins in pre-emancipation days when on feast days and holidays African women would depart from donning the dreary uniform or livre that slaves were provided, and would adorn themselves in bright finery purchased from the proceeds of their small garden allotments. •
The Jip (sometimes called the madras after the fabric used to make it) is derived from the WOB DWIYET, a grand robe which was a variation of the European dress of the French settlers, but which has fallen out of use. Typically when we talk of traditional wear, we talk about women's wear. Men would wear black trousers, white long-sleeved shirt with a bow tie and a sash or either coloured satin or madras with black shoes and black socks.

FRANK NORVILLE was a photographer, actor, dancer and cultural activist, but what he's most fondly remembered for is his work as a singer, musician and composer.

He has skillfully arranged and recorded a large repertoire of Saint Lucian folk music and is credited with preserving what might otherwise be lost. He has written a booklet on the folk dances of Saint Lucia and in 1983 published "Songs of St Lucia: ‘folk songs’", a comprehensive scoring of the island’s most popular folk music.

There’s tons to enjoy about Pemmie! (also spelt Paime)
We love to add a touch of coconut to ours for that extra flavour...How do you prepare yours?
With raisins wrapped in banana leaves? Maybe with pumpkin sealed in foil, tell us below! ~
Check out this recipe to make your own!: -3 cups cornmeal, -1 ½ cup grated coconut, -1 ½ cup sugar, -½ cup evaporated milk or water, -½ teaspoon powdered cinnamon, -1 cup grated pumpkin (optional), -4 tablespoons shortening, -¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, -¼ teaspoon of vanila essence, -Banana leaves (foil paper if you do not have banana leaves), -Twine for tying (only if you use banana leaves), -½ cup dried fruit (optional) ~
Preparation: Add the cornmeal, grated coconut, sugar, powdered cinnamon, nutmeg, grated pumpkin and mix thoroughly. Mix into a thick dough, using milk or water. A little more cornmeal may be added, if the mixture turns out to be too soft. Wash and dry banana leaves. Cut away main stem and cut into 6 inch squares. Place a spoonful of the mixture on each square and tie into parcels. Cook in boiling water for about 45 minutes. Take out of water and drain. Serve warm or cold. ~

He is without a doubt one of St. Lucia's key Cultural Personalities whose influence is still felt today!

Harold Simmons has often been called the father of St Lucian culture because of his tireless work researching, recording and promoting the island's rich cultural heritage. He wrote fastidiously on fading traditions and facilitated other researchers' work in the field and as a result has preserved many folkloric practices that would otherwise have been lost.

He was well known in St. Lucia and beyond as a local historian, archaeologist, artist, folklorist and social worker. He was a mentor to the young Derek Walcott and Dunstan St. Omer who regard him as their teacher. The Folk Research Centre has recognized him as the inspiring spirit of all their work. Mr. Simmons was also a journalist, who served as a local correspondent for the Trinidad Guardian and Reuter's. He was also editor of the VOICE from late 1957 to April 1959.

Did you know that Saint Lucia's official cooking stove is hand crafted using clay?
The tradition of making these unique cooking stoves – the Coalpot, or in the Saint Lucian Kweyol language, the ‘Tesson’ and the round-bellied cookpot, the ‘Canawi,’ is a wonder to behold!

BRANDON NEIDERAUER, A HEART OF GOLD!

As if being one of the most sought after young guitarists in the world was not enough, 14 year old Brandon Niederauer has not just a head of golden locks but also a "heart of gold". "Breakfast with Brandon" held during the Soleil Blues Festival in September was a hit with students from across the island. Brandon, in a sit-down session with music students on the island, offered up, as part of the breakfast menu, heart-felt advice to his young audience, advice based on his experience as a young successful student both in terms of his academic and musical pursuits.
Supported by his parents Gary and Alexandra Niederauer, Brandon explained that balance is the key to his success where he understands that his academic education is as important as his musical career and that the two things work hand-in-hand. He
noted, "I must be able to do well at Math and English and the Sciences to be able to write and understand and enjoy music," adding, "My parents make it clear that if I do not do well in school, I cannot play my guitar.
I want to play my guitar so I work hard to maintain A's at school." #BluesFestival

Did you know that the cocoa pod is picked and then fermented for three weeks. The cocoa is roasted inside a clay pot with the sun.
When it's fully roasted, the beans are allowed to get cold and then the shells from the beans are removed.

Then they go in a grinder to make a paste. To make the actual stick, it is then rolled on a flat surface. Sounds like the perfect remedy for a chilly day 😊
