Here is another amazing entry from our storytelling competition. This one is from the lovely @alibozza123.
After nabbing some cheap Jetstar flights to the Philippines and picking up a Lonely Planet guide to learn what on earth one does in the Philippines, I was very excited to learn that the most "perfect" volcano on the world, Mt Mayon, can be climbed!
I organised our hike with a local guide group and assured my travel buddy, Mauz, that it was going to be amazing. (Famous last words?!)
We were told to pack light and didn't question it, after all we're in the tropics right?! The first day of the overnight hike I nearly drowned in my own sweat in the hot humid climate. As we climbed higher the temperature dropped and as night fell we climbed into the helpless little tent we were provided and shivered ourselves to sleep. There may have been a spooning moment which we swore never to speak of, but it was all about survival at that point.
We rose at 2am to continue the climb to the top. In driving rain, no rain coats, wind and a missed memo about bringing your own snacks, we trudged step after step up ridiculously steep and slippery wet rocky slopes. Despite the fog, heavy cloud, and the darkness of night time I couldn't not notice the death stares coming from my starved and freezing friend Mauz, wondering what the heck I had got us both into.
After reaching the top just before 8am, the clouds parted, the rain stopped, and the most glorious sunshine bounced off the surrounding oceans, giving us a view that money simply cannot buy!! Of all my travels and mountains climbed, this was by far one of the most unexpected yet amazing moments of my life. And despite the horror climb, Mauz agrees!
