Comparison is a liar and a thief. It gets you to glance to the left and says you aren't good enough. Then to the right, and says you aren't measuring up. Comparison steals your freedom to show up, because what if you're seen, and not pretty like this person or funny like that person or likable like another or smart like her?
And you know what? You're not. You're not pretty or funny or likable or smart like that person over there. But you don't need to be. You only need to be pretty like YOU. Funny like YOU. Likable like YOU. Smart like YOU. And guess what? You already are.
The weighty expectations of what we're "supposed" to be in the eyes of others compel us to create and monitor images that are "safe," because what if we reveal our true selves and it's too much or not enough? But when we reject the silly notion that the personas of others are the standard for our own, we're free to be the people God made us to be. We're free to use our unique voices.
And the beauty of using your own voice is that YOU are the only one who can do that. YOU have a perspective to share unlike anyone else's, glittered with insight from your individual story. YOUR voice, is beautiful. And YOUR voice, is needed.
