While in Guatemala, we've been in absolute awe of its beauty and the ever-smiling Guatemalan people. But as with many countries we've visited on this journey, a darker truth lies behind the colourful streets that travellers marvel. Indigenous females are particularly vulnerable, with femicide, estimated rape rates and teen/pre-teen pregnancy sitting unsettling high in global statistics, and justice mostly out of reach due to poverty, low literacy and the stigma of reporting sexual assaults. Although there's not a huge amount we as passing tourists can do to help a situation that requires a great societal shift, we can make a point wherever possible of choosing to give our business to social enterprises that use their profits to better the community and empower women. We’ve been pleased to find many of them here in Guatemala 👍 Some educate and train; others support women's cooperatives that cut out the penny-pinching middleman, allowing women at the bottom of the supply chain to have financial freedom and therefore more of a voice in both the domestic and public spheres 💪 Have you supported any social enterprises at home or during your travels? What were they working towards? * * *
