These original costumes are so so tiny - it’s hard to believe how small people were. The picture doesn’t really portray this. Imagine walking into a room full of men and women wearing such outfits and seeing how small they were ... plus the sounds, smells etc. Oh for a time machine! #fashion #fashionhistory #kensingtonpalace #royals #royal #history #london #embroidery #suit #dress #socialhistory #thewaywewere

#BlackHistoryMonth day 15: here is footage from the first ever Martin Luther King Day in 1986. Although King was assassinated in 1968, legislation designating the third Monday in January—near his Jan. 15 birthday—as a legal holiday to honor him did not pass until 1983. The first year the U.S. observed the holiday was 1986, when the day fell on Jan. 20.

Pop down to the Harris Museum and take a look at my 72:18 photography exhibition based on Preston’s former Indoor Market. It’s an important piece of Preston’s social history, evocatively captured in photographs for future generations to enjoy.

HU🇭🇺⬇️ Servants’ staircase at Nostell Priory. It was said to be haunted, so servants were not keen on using it. I can understand... Spooky... 😯
***
A szolgálók hátsó lépcsője a Nostell udvarházban. A szolgálók állítólag nem szívesen használták, mert kísérteteket véltek látni rajta... Úúú... félelmetes...😯

From my archive. A ‘twocked’ and burnt out Ford Sierra, Scotswood, Newcastle1992. In the late 80s/early 90s, ‘twocking’, (taking without the owners consent), was a popular pastime amongst kids in the west end of Newcastle. I lived on Roberts Street in Scotswood for a few years after graduation from college. It was cheap, I was skint, and there was rarely a dull moment for a social documentary photographer. Often, I’d walk down the hill and down the steps of the old Scotswood station to the bus and a scene of motorised mayhem, the most bizarre by far being the twocked cement mixer. I was living there during the riots of 91, and after being dropped off home after a night looking for trouble with journalist and photographer colleagues, I suggested that living somewhere a bit quieter could be nice. The Observer reporter Barry Hugill suggested Beirut! #twocked #burntout #fordsierra #scotswood #scotswoodroad #newcastle #tyneside #takenwithoutconsent #documentary #documentaryphotography #bnw #analogphotography #socialhistory #britishhistory #trashed #monochrome

Formed OTD in 1966, The Black Panther Party for Self Defence, by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton. The BBP instituted a variety of community social programs, most extensively the Free Breakfast for Children Programs, and community health clinics to address issues like food injustice.

Throughout Labour's history, even in its earliest years, women were present in the room, but they were not always recorded or remembered. They came from many different backgrounds and they worked for the causes they believed in as organisers, campaigners, negotiators, polemicists, public speakers and leaders.

In Dracula, two of the heroes are doctors: Dr Van Helsing and his former student Dr Seward eventually lead the hunt to defeat Count Dracula. There has been much speculation that Stoker’s real-life brothers, both doctors, were the inspirations for these characters.

Stoker’s older brother Sir Thornley Stoker pictured above was a successful neurosurgeon who served as president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Bram’s younger brother Dr George Stoker was a surgeon in the British army who later became a pioneer in ozone therapy.

It is apparent that Bram sought advice from his brothers on matters relating to medicine in his fiction.

Free school milk, Courtland School, Mill Hill. Postcard from the Museum of London, 1959 photo. Coincidentally my daughter attended the school many years later, the children were excited to find this image on a trip to the museum! At my country primary school the teacher used to put the bottles on the radiator to warm. We were never ill!
